To the rest of you blithering idiots cutting and pasting from Microsoft Word so hard that your posts are unreadable: Did I miss the part in the initial post about where the questioner posted about steroids?
Did he cross-post the question to the steroids board?
Did the poster say that he was willing to do anything to be an elite athlete in the world of sprinting?
No?
Then shut the sweet, almighty fuck up. This was a training question.
Dan “It’s impossible to get stronger without a needle” McVicker
<I have found that speed movements like snatches, powercleans and clean and jerks actually do carry over to powerlifting.
Benedict Magnusson who just got the world record 970 deadlift openly tells people that the reason he is so strong is that he does sprints and olympic movements to assist his powertraining.>
Hey McDick,
Try refraining from selective reading. This is what started it. Now you shut the fuck up.

Actually, you started it. Everyone else was trying to give advice and help someone who also wants to become stronger and faster.
Your posts are antagonistic, and I fail to see how they could help anyone.
sorry to everyone for not replying sooner i was away for easter. looks like i missed a lot though, haha. like bear said, i wasn’t trying to start world war III, i’ve just been goin insane trying to figure out away to best incorporate powerlifting and olympic lifting into an effective routine. i’m 5’6" 160 lbs, run the 40 yd dash in 4.38, the 55 meter in 6.59, and the 100 meter in 10.94. my lifts right now are ok: 275x3 bench, 315x4 squat, 365x6 deadlift. i’m 19 and have been training for 5 years but i feel as if i’m not maximizing my potential and want to compete at a higher level. i feel as if i could do much better with correct lifts, and no i do not take any supplements, just good eating, good lifting, and protein. but thanks to everyone for the good advice, and thanks also for the others for the entertaining fight.

Those are great numbers. Congratulations on that because those stats are absolute achievements.
My advice to you would be to see what the olympic sprinters do and incorporate some of that into your training. Granted, some of these guys may be off the deep end with stuff you don’t have the equipment to do, or whatever, but it’s always worth a look.
If you wanted to do olympic and PLing, both, I would substitute olympic lifts in and eliminate dynamic effort work. This is assuming of course, you were going to train the olympic lifts in the 70% and under range. If you want to go heavy on the olympic lifts, then scale back ME work on the powerlifts.
Don’t get too hung up on not doing the exact right thing. The most important thing is getting in the gym and doing some work. If you are squatting, deadlifting, and doing olympic lifts, then you are in a good place training wise.
Bigblue, actually, KellyB has just written a great article on his site higher-faster-sports.com. The article is titled “The Simple man’s guide to speed development”.

cycomiko,
What a fuckin complete waste of time.
well dont proving that you are the waste of fucking time.
Now go back and learn how to read, but oh that wouldnt support your retarded view on the world. Whats the matter, did you do a cycle of drugs, didnt deadlift 300 and get all upset or something.
Lets put it a nice simple way seeing as you appear as intellegent as a bear shit.
If drugs are the cause of Bennis lift, how come there are only two other people on the earth deadlifting close to him?
but I wont hold my breath for an intellegent reply

cycomiko,
BTW, what the FUCK is your argument about?
While I am having fun
Do you know how to read?
can you show me SPECIFICALLY where I said this? that is if you can take the time to read something.
Obviously must be considering i didnt say anything about sprinting at all.
Where did I say that? or are you making things up again?
Consider going back to kindergarten to learn reading again
What has this got to do with what I asked, oh thats right - NOTHING.
here I was all excited thinking that maybe you would read what I asked, but no. Obviously your mother dropped you on your head at a very early age.
Um, did I say he wasnt using? did I say he was? oh wait, thats right, you dont actually read what people write. But if you think that benni wouldnt be in the top 10,000 you are very mentally challanged. Or are you just jealous?
I will ask this again, but I dont expect you to actually read something somebody writes.
There are a lot of people in this world that are taking a truck load of drugs. Why are they not deadlifting 970?
not blessed and not a god.
Double bodyweight at 37… oo, you wanna know something, really not impressive.
But oh well Im sure that your mommy thinks your special

I despise drug use (who?d believe it?). I?ve personally kept dozens of young potential users from dropping that first cycle. My informed opinion? only the truly weak and foolish want to indulge.
Only the truly weak, foolish, and ELITE atheletes in EVERY sport.
Yeah, I’m sure Steve Nash is on the juice. Pedro Martinez is no doubt juicing as well. And let’s not even debate Petyon Manning, who definitely has a GH gut.
If you were a major league baseball player who played during the era when steroids were legal, one could argue you would be pretty foolish to not take steroids.

OK OK, maybe they arent, but goddamnit they should be… let me rephrase to sports that require strength.
I’m starting to like you. I’ll give you this… you’re fuckin honest. Which means you still have balls regardless of our difference in opinions to the use of juice.
You’ve also got my respect and an apology if I was an A-hole.

According to Charlie Francis, quick lifts (i.e. olympic lifts) do NOT convert “better” than power lifts. They are simply a way to tax the CNS and coax it into allowing you to produce more power overall. Ben Johnson never did cleans or other olympic lifts at all, but he did 1/2 (powerlifting) squats and bench.
He tried to move heavy weight as fast as possible, which many coaches claim will help you. It will. Basically, attempting (really visualizing and trying) to move a weight fast will encode “fast and strong” into your brain, and it will have neural carryover into other tasks which require short, intense bursts.
You get more CNS involvement with heavy weight, although lighter weights can have a positive effect. Basically, the Olympic lifts aren’t “better” than the powerlifts. In the end, consistency is the key.
Yoda, two questions:
Do you care to back up your statements about Charlie Francis view on Olympic Lifts? Charlie wrote an artilce for T-Mag called “High Octane Training - Q&A for High Performance Athletes”. Here is an excerpt:
Olympic Weightlifting for Athletes
Q: Do you think the time spent perfecting the full Olympic lifts is an efficient allocation of resources for athletes, throwers specifically? Or could the athlete concentrate on simpler multi-joint lifts and increase bar speed during the conversion phase to gain a similar effect? They could then spend the time necessary to successfully learn the Olympic lifts on perfecting their specific events instead. Your thoughts?
A: While it’s true that simpler lifts can be perfected more easily, the reason that Olympic lifts are chosen is to use as many muscles as possible in a single lift in order to get the maximum stimulation with the minimum number of lifts. This is a big issue with sprinters where there’s a lot of competition for central nervous system (CNS) energy.
Seems to me that he is favouring the OL’s.
2. Where did you read that Ben Johnson did NOT perform Olympic lifts? I’m pretty skeptical of that. Especially if Charlie encourages the use of the OL’s, and Charlie was his coach.
I have not read Charlie’s books, so I’m not an expert on his views (other than what I read from him on T-Nation), but maybe you have read them.
This article is getting crazy!!!
I know that most top ranked athletes use steroids, I know that. But NOT everyone uses them.
A outgoing college athlete posts to get knowledge from various sources and all of a sudden it turns into a pissin’ match.
I hope that he recieves all great informaion and increases his speed. This site is not only angry people BUT very knowledgable, highly skilled athletes.
T-CELL- Im not going to say anything bad, you are obviously a wealth of information. “the older I get the less faith I put into a man’s word and more into his actions” great quote.
2x bdwt benchpress-WOW!!!
40" vertical-WOW!!!

those are great for you.
FOR ME— I am currently a TOP 20 lifter in America and have been for the last 4 years.
I compete DRUG-FREE and tested and will take TOP 3 at the Nationals this July-
If I see a one-arm pull up meet I’ll contact you for the drug-free division. that way you wont have to sit at home with NO trophies or medals just ONE very big opinion to stare at.
