Polite Place To Do Deadlifts

Best place to do deadlifts is directly in front of someone.

Then again, I’m not out to make friends in the gym this year.

Best place to deadlift is in the locker room, clad in just an athletic supporter.

With ever rep, one should scream in one’s manliest voice, “Should I put lotion on this?!”

After that, no one will any longer give you guff.

People make me laugh. Just because it’s called a Squat rack doesnt mean you can ONLY squat in there. Granted, doing curls in the rack is ultra gay…but someone made a snide comment in another thread about how appaled he was that someone did his Presses in the rack. Wtf?

I cannot believe how lazy people are about loading the bar. Sort of negates the whole working out concept, no?

To the poster who asked about pulling from the pins in the power cage:
You’re doing a rack pull, which works the top portion of the lift more. I would never do these in place of deadlifts from the floor, but I’m also training for strongman. If you’re not training for any particular event, I’d imagine the two inches wouldn’t be a big deal. But I’m probably wrong.

Agreed. The power rack at my gym may as well have my name on it because I bench, squat, dead, shrug, and row in it. What is really funny is that when I come into the gym, the people that know me clear their stuff away from the rack and let me have it. I never have to wait for it, nor is anyone bitter that I do the bulk of my training in it. They know I lift with a different motivation, so they respect that. Fortunately I many nice, respectable people at my gym. Mostly regulars from years ago.

you my friend are a thinker :D…do you have a brochure or pamphlet i can subscribe to?
Seriously, why have I never seen this done or thought of it? It seems so common sense now that I’ve read it, but I’m always the asshole fumbling around with a loaded barbell trying to get plates off of it.

I always do deadlifts on the floor unless I’m training my lockout. In that case, I do rack pulls from the knees or ~2" below the knees in the squat rack.

Should I stand on top of some plates or something and pull to make up the difference?
Depends on your goals and overall program design. If you want a big deadlift from the floor, yes, make up the difference. If you’re not concerned with PL-style deadlift numbers and have other heavy movements that take your legs and hips through a fuller ROM, not a big deal.

How about any damned place you want to. Just like the arm curl folks.
the problem with that is that in a commercial gym there is no gym etiquette, so you run the risk of some retard walking right behind you while deadlifting.

This happened to me, and the douche was being escorted by a “personal trainer” - I told them both to go fuck themselves and if they came within 10 feet of me while DL’ing I would fucking ram my fist down their throats. That personal trainer didn’t make eye contact with me for at least 2 months.

Violent, but effective. However, these days I just avoid the confrontation and DL in the power rack.

Sorry dude! My gym is a “family fitness” center. There is one power cage and one squat rack. Most of the squatters do so in the squat rack. And the curlers use the squat rack too. The power rack must be intimidating to most because it isn’t used much. And like I said earlier most of the members have been there for a few years, so we all pretty much know each other. Something else that’s funny is when I get to the rack the older guys I know are alway curious as to what weights I’ll be putting up that day. It’s like they look at me and recall their glory days of football and hard training. I have a bunch of supportive peeps there. I love my gym. How many of you can say that? And as for assholes, the few that may be there, never, ever bother me.

Nice - I’d think about moving out of NY only for that!!! We have a never - ending supply of assholes here, especially this time of year.

tell me about it, in brooklyn, the NYRM are just tearing up the place…however, i dont ‘hate’ my gym, i just wish certain ppl would fk off for good.

I like to do my deadlifts on Mondays in the middle of the groups of “Bench and Biceps” boys that think Monday is the holy day for the uppper body. Then I like to drop the bar on their feet while they are in the mirror admiring their swole 13" arms.

The words deadlift and polite should never be used in the same sentence.

Yeah DW…we have seen your lifts…LOL!

LIIIGGGHHT WEEEEIIIIIGGGHT!

Man, the fact that so many people know about using 5lb plates to load the deadlift makes me seem like an idiot. The first time someone showed me that, it seemed like a revelation.

This beautiful story brought tears to my eyes, BigRagoo.

If I ever have children, I will tell it to them at bedtime.

Yea, that about sums up my feelings. Love the gym and equipment, hate most of the people. Ah well. Nothing is perfect, I guess.
