Planet Fitness - My experience

So I went to see the Habs vs. Sabres in Buffalo on February 17th.

Friday night, we hit up the town and noticed not much going on so we went back to the hotel and did a shoulder workout @ the gym.

Saturday, I put the GPS address for Buffalo Gold’s Gym into my unit only to be led to a gym that closed down. While driving around aimlessly as my friend searched in my GPS for a gym, we hit upon planet fitness in WEST SENECA, NY.

Of course we decided to check it out. Here’s me in front of it.

Once inside, we were greeted with courtesy by the receptionist. I noticed a great sign.

“Bodybuilding tanktops”. Hahahha.

I estimated that about 75% of the gym was treadmills and ellipticals.

There was another great sign near the entrance, instructing us to leave our egos at the door:

That’s great because, well, it’s hard to show your ego to anyone on an elliptical trainer.

Below the sign marked “judgment free zone” was a 10-machine 30-minute circuit managed by a traffic light. Light goes green, you go to machine. Light goes red, you stopped.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/431147_10150568320866989_506006988_9230474_1662216772_n.jpg

Hahahah, what an epic concept. Overall an OK gym, and the denizens were quite funny. Saw a 300 pound guy doing bicep curls, several grannies “power walking” the treadmills, zero power racks on site but I don’t think others noticed.

So I went in and did benches, deadlifts, pull-ups, dips, and left. I took a tootsie roll (seriously they’re in a bowl at the front desk) and a couple of yellow and purple pens on the way out for posterity. I benched 235 on a purple rack.

Sunday we drove to Gold’s Gym in Rochester.

Cool story bro.

You’re lucky you could properly bench and deadlift. I went to the one near me with a buddy that has a membership and they have 2 smith machines, dumbbells that only go up to 75, and curl bars that only go to 60. No free bars for squats, deads, press, etc.

What’s a shakeweight?

Shakeweightpantsdon’tfit

What is funny now is planet fitness is the official gym of the biggest loser TV show as of this season. Since they are actually working out and making progress they are often breaking rules of the gym that would set off the lunk alarm.

Edit: I don’t actually watch the show anymore, only saw the minimum required to make the conclusion above.

LOL - a lunk is someone who “judges”, then their judgement right below.

I wish there was planet fitness in my area, I would actively encourage people at my gym who just take up space and get in the way to go check it out.

Their business model is to poach the time-wasters (and the membership fees that come with them) from other gyms anyway. PF know that most of their clientele will stop training long before their membership expires, and that’s where the money is to be made.

It’s the antithesis of a hardcore gym. Their basic message is “We know you’re lazy and a quitter; come and be lazy and quit with us. Let us make your failure as painless and as non-judgemental as possible. You can wallow in your mediocrity at home while you wait out your contract. Come back next year and do it all over again”.

They do what they do very well.

haha!! My own PF anecdote: while travelling a few years ago, I went to one as the hotel “gym” was a treadmill and a TV… Anyway, I noticed that they did indeed have barbells, but they looked really new. Then I noticed why: they had oiled the ENTIRE bar to “keep it shiny and new looking” (what I was told when I asked why someone would do such a thing.) Still makes me laugh when I see a PF location…

Well put! : )

Angry Chicken snagged a couple free pizzas from the local Planet Fitness on their free pizza night not to long ago. It was pretty crappy pizza, but I can’t complain about the price. I’m pretty sure there’s an article on T-Nation extolling the virtues of a post workout meal consisting of tootsie rolls and pizza.

Not sure if you’re from the area or were just in for the game, but PM me if you ever plan to lift in Rochester again. I’m 20 min away and periodically emerge from my cave to litter other facilities w/chalk.

JUDGEMENT FREE BRO.

Yet has commercials like these…

NO JUDGEMENTS BRO.

That would be cool if you and Samir went there together, wreaked havoc, got thrown out, and had the entire incident on video!

This place reads like Snap Fitness…at least I get to be a lunk there…LOL

Ha. Although hilarity would ensue for months, I meant if he lifts at a Gold’s again. I’d like to think a PF would turn me away a few steps in the door because they know the alarm is imminent

I go to a Charter Fitness when I can’t make it out to my regular gym. I’m probably the biggest “Lunk” in there. And I love it.
