I have always wondered is it neccessary for the sprinters to put the brakes on the last 10 meters during the qualifiers. Are they really saving there energy and cns for the finals. I guess they treat they qualifying as a warm up to a max attempt.
Coasting through the finish line is mainly done to preserve energy by the top guys. There’s only a limited amount of energy to spend, and if they go to hard during the qualifiers then they will have a sub-par final.
But I think it’s also to look cool, to put on a show for the crowd, and to psych out the other opponents. Most sprinters have huge egos… it’s an event comprised of mostly type A personalities. They tend to have explosive personalities to go along with their highly taught nervous systems.
