Olympic Barbell Weight?

I have thought for a couple of years that my “Olympic Barbell” set had a full-fledged Olympic Barbell with it…yet when I weighed the thing last night (I don’t know why I never did that before…?) it only weighs about 35 lbs. This is the weight without collars essentially (since the “plastic” collars I have weigh less than a pound).

My barbell is 86 inches (218 centimeters) from tip to tip (although I may be an inch or two long on this), and the end is 1.875" in diameter (4.76 centimeters).

So…do I actually “have” an Olympic barbell, and the 45 lb “common weight” includes two 5 lb collars, or do have some mutant bar…?

Thanks,

Offical competition bars are 45lbs – 55 with proper collars-- but most bars purchased other wise are light. Many weighing from 30 to 43lbs.

The size of the men’s Olympic bar is 20Kg or 45#. Women’s bars are 15Kg or about 33#. Junior bars are 10Kg or 22# and are usually shorter.

The Men’s bar is usually slightly larger around (28 mm) when measured in the middle. You will probably find that your bar is 25 mm around.

Correct-amundo.

My Wal-mart Gold’s Gym bar weighs 40#.

I have two: a 35# and 40#. Although, the ones at my school are 45#, I have seen great differences. I always weigh new bars now.
