Oats With Whey - It's New to Me

i just thought to add whey to my oats in the a.m. not rocket science but what can i say i was hit in the head a lot as a child.

  1. vanilla whey plus oats (not hot) taste like cake batter only healthy.

  2. chocolate whey added to hot oats plus a spoonful of natty PB is great, i love the chocolate peanut butter combo.

Q: does the hot water breakdown the integrity of the whey?

I’ve been mixing Metabolic Drive with my oats for years.

I add in some frozen berries while the oats are fresh out of the microwave to help the oats cool and then I add in the Metabolic Drive.

Very tasty.

what vanilla whey is this that you speak of? i’ve never had any that tasted like cake batter.

I’ve just been adding 1/2 cup of quick oats to 3 scoops of Grow! Whey. For awhile I was putting a little cinnamon in there, too. I don’t blend it or anything, just chew the oats down when ya drink it. It’s disturbing how much I LOVE this for breakfast.

It’s been discussed on here before about cooking with whey, and the consensus seems to be that it’s okay. Still, I wait till my oats are cool before I add the protein powder, as I have found that the heat can sour the protein.

thanks…the vanilla i’m speaking of is (ON)Optimum Nutrition Creamy Vanilla. Usually I prefer Extreme Milk Chocolate but as vanilla goes it’s good.

ON is my protein of choice, which brands do T-Nation members like the best?

I know I’ve said it before, but oats, with Metabolic Drive (I like to use a scoop of banana, and a scoop of choc), and a bit of natty PB is the perfect macro breakdown for a meal. Enough protein, complex carbs and fiber, and healthy fats. I’ve often wondered what would happend if I ate nothing but this concoction 5x a day!

Seriously?

Metabolic Drive or Metabolic Drive Complete.

Check the store in the link at the top.

Agreed. Metabolic Drive in either version rocks.

I recently tried some ON proteins after hearing people rave about them on another site and was pretty disappointed.

Didn’t you know its blasphemous to mention other whey brands on Biotest’s site?!! :stuck_out_tongue:

I like:
ON Chocolate or Banana (combo of both might be good actually but I’ve never tried it)
PVL Blueberry
Syntrax Fuzzy Navel

Cooking with whey is NOT okay, it denatures the protein causing it to fold upon itself and basically make it useless for nutrients… any milk based protein cannot be warmed or cooked with while maintaining the integrity of the protein…

just throw some cold water on it and let it sit for a few…mmmm my favorite meal of the day

This is flat out incorrect.

Some denaturing may occur, but the same is true with any protein source that’s cooked, and it does not render the protein useless.

milk protein is hypersensitive to heat its not the same as with an egg where the denaturing just aids digestion…

Whey protein can be denatured by heat. High heat denatures whey proteins, destroying some bioactive compounds
denaturing the whey protein triggers hydrophobic interactions with other proteins, and the formation of disulfide bonds between whey proteins and casein micelles, leading to aggregation with other milk proteins.

better explanation for you

casein powder + cooked oats + apples + honey = some weird delicious gooey substitute for rice krispy squares

I add whey to my oats everyday… cold. and its tastes real good

i add raw oats into a blender with greens and whey isolate and natural peanut butter for my post workout shake in the morning. (6 AM workouts and have to be at work by 8 AM) so I don’t have the luxury of waking up to eat cooked oats preworkout while waiting for it to digest…usually preworkout consists of Gatorade and BCAA’s.

But the oats in the shakes are a great way to keep me full until lunch.

I run a couple canisters of oats through the food processor just to chop them up a but. Then store them in an old whey jug. I scoop them into my shakes throughout the day. Probably my primary source of carbs. I never cook them.
