New PR

This is my second time deadlifting (so i guess as long as I did more than the first time it’s a PR) but I pulled a 320, it felt DAMN GOOD. but man I was dead after that one.

-Dave

good job, i am a new when it comes to deadlifting also. About 4 weeks ago I started and pulled 275 now I am up to 325. Hopefully we will both be pullin 400 soon. My goal is 425 raw @under 181 before i turn 17(about 11 months from now).

andrew, in my opinion that would be impressive.

one word of caution, even if you have good leverages for the deadlift, be wary of pulling heavy every week. As your strength goes up and the weights get heavier, it can become enormously taxing on the CNS.

There are plenty of ways to work the deadlift musculature without the massive CNS stimulus of holding a heavy barbell in your hands. Of course you have to pull often as well, but not always heavy…

just food for thought…best of luck

Congrats to both of you if you have not already you should read Dave Tate’s top 10 deadlifting mistakes article here on T-Mag

i personally think that article is for competitive PL’s, or trainers who are nearing plateaus after years of training. Some of the tips would be counter productive to novices (ie rounding shoulders).

Not to flame, but I would like to see the form on such deadlifts. I see so many newbies trying deadlifts and I cringe at the sight of what they call a deadlift. Some people might argue that as long as the weight gets up, it counts but I don’t agree at all, not when it comes to training. Saw this guy nearly killing himself with 225lbs so I asked him to do it like this(showed him proper form), he couldn’t budge 185lbs even 1 inch. I have seen this too many times, so whenever i hear a beginner post such and such a lift, I take it with a grain of salt. Anyway, a PR is a PR so congrats.

well keep in mind that the guy is 5’6" and 160ish (i forget) so its like me pulling 470 (@235).

Hey Loop, I take no offence at all, as a matter of fact I love it when what I say is called on. I did pull the 320, and to the best of my knowledge I kept pretty strict form. But for the last week my workout partner hasn’t been able to make it to the gym (lack of priorities) So my form could have been ass. All I had was the mirror in front of me, and I was really concentrating more on getting the weight up and locked out than on what I looked like (although I bet I looked damn sexy pulling that… or not.)

Tomorrow my workout buddy says he will be there, so tomorrow we will know if I can do it again… with somebody checking my form.

Good job Dave!
When I started pulling my PR went up quick. Just learning how to DL properly will boost your numbers.
Keep at it.

CRASH AND BURN!!! I completely bombed on 320 today, maybe I was a little worn out, but I just couldn’t get it up ( I swear this never happened before… honestly) and to add insult to injury my workout partner joined me and just crushed it… more motivation I guess.

Ps. his first time pulling… good form.

Kentucky fried CNS

I do not train the deadlift heavy all the time, my 3 weeks were just trying to get technique down and seeing where my max was. For the next 8 weeks, I am not going to pull heavy. I am going to work on heavy forms of goodmornings, goodmorning squats, box squats, SLDL off blocks, RDL, dimel deadlifts, and Pin pulls. My only deadlifts will be done on DE Squat/Dead day for speed singles using about 50%. I will again test my max in about 9 weeks. Loopfit I think my form is pretty good, but I train alone, so I dont have any one to correct me. At 16 its hard to find anyone that deadlifts heavy, and if they do they usually use the trap bar. I’ll try to get a couple shots up so any criticism will be helpful.

good job, i just started them a month or two back, still haven’t tried to max. want to try and get the form down and the weaker muscles up to par before any heavy work.

Yeah… I was pretty sure it was an act of sheer stupidity, but sometimes (most of the time with me) stupidity reigns supreme. Sometimes the competition can be a bad thing.
So as suggested, I will lay off the heavy for a while and concentrate on form, my goals are to be pressing 300 and squatting and pulling 400 by the end of May… I think it is attainable if I keep my eye on the prize.
