New Judo Rules

I thought they removed things like ashi garami because they had a very high incidence of popped knees and dislocated hips. Same thing with waki gatame which got banned from standing (at least for a while) because people would try to apply from too far away and blow out the guy’s wrist. Point is that sparring should be safe enough that people want to get into the ring…

And standing kata garuma is very much an only-in-the-ring technique unless you are getting attacked by overly-tall super lightweights. (Original version was pulling someone off a horse when their hips were already roughly shoulder height.)

I’m short for my weight (5’5" tops @ 150), and with a heavy wrestling background, leg attacks like Kata Garuma and morote gari are my bread and butter. When you say that people get hurt due to waki gatame and ashi garami…that just means they are that effective. I don’t agree with martial sports. Getting hurt is part of the game.
