Need Help Buying a Bike

I am riding to the train station this summer and I need to buy a bike. I will be posting a ‘wanted’ ad on craigslist but I need help.

For the cyclists out there, what should I be looking for in a bike costing 100 dollars? It will be used and it should be a road bike. I have no idea why bike prices are so expensive(even the used ones) and I appreciate you helping me out.

I don’t know much about bikes but make sure you are happy with whatever you buy. My little brother has spent about ?400 on new bike parts since he got his bike in December.
