Mercury in Atlantic Mackerel

I eat 400-450 g of atlantic mackerel every morning for one year already. I didn’t notice any problem with my health, but I have read about mercury in fish, so I started to worry about cumulative effect of mercury. This fish really solved my high blood pressure which I have since high school. I am 33. yo now. Someone knows morea bout this? Thank you! Ivan

The life span of the fish matters. Older and bigger fish accumulate more mercury. Younger fish don’t accumulate as much. For instance King Mackerel at six feet long (a relative of tuna) has higher levels of mercury than Chub Mackerel which is 8 to 14 inches long and a much shorter lifespan. You can continue eating seafood. Just eat more fish like chub mackerel, salmon, herring, and sardines. Avoid king mackerel, swordfish, tile fish and the like. Use the link below for a reference.

Thanks man! Theese mackerels I eat are sort of 30-35cm long (10-12 inches)… I think they are Atlantic mackerel…but anyway… when I calculated it in some online calculator, it seems that I have 160% of max. mercury intake… that’s why I started to worry…

Atlantic mackerel at .050 fall into the low category. I wouldn’t get too concerned.

Ok, thanks!

drink some black tea plain between meals a couple times a day and stop worrying. your body has mechanisms to deal with this. if it is part of a healthy diet your body will likely have no problem dealing with it as working better to begin with - this is supported by your testimony to improved health. the tea has compounds that will help your body remove what little mercury you consume.

Agreed. Not to worry.

Ok guys. I’ll continue with my fish  Thanks
