Maple Syrup Strength (littlesleeper)

I feel like good squat mechanics are rewarded on low handle trap bar. My conventional pull is nearly straight legged. Low handle trap bar forces me to use my quad, which I don’t care for

I think that my low handle trap bar deadlifts are also stronger than my conventional deadlift, but they feel much more physically exhausting to me.
Which makes Pwn’s absurdly high rep trap bar deadlift sets even more impressive for cardio/muscular endurance.

I just purchased an 1 year membership for Strongman Corporation Canada (run by Maxime Boudreault and Samantha Beliveau). I’m currently on the wait list for a competition on March 11th. I’ve been thinking about signing up for it for the last month, but I emailed them today and they said my weight class (-105kg) just filled up today.
The host said that based on his past experience, there is a decent chance that someone will drop out (18 total athletes in this weight class). Alternatively, there is one spot left in the -90kg class (I’m not confident that I can make weight in just 2 months - sitting at 217lbs right now), or several spots remaining in the 120kg class.
I had a look at the weights for the 120kg class, and I do not see myself zeroing all events, so I may just roll with the big boys if need be.

Events for this competition are: (weights shown for the 120kg class)

  1. Deadlift Medley (Axle/Stiff Bar/DL Bar/Trap Bar) - 272.5kg/600lbs is top weight for trap bar, 60s time limit
  2. Viking Press - 125kg/275lbs for reps, 60s time limit
  3. Sandbag Carry to Wheelbarrow - Carry 100kg/220lb sandbag 50’, load into wheelbarrow (345kg/760lbs), wheel back 50’. 60s time limit.
  4. Tire flip simulator - 275kg for 3 flips, 60s time limit
  5. Sandbag throw - 30/35/40/45/50, 5 bags over a 15’ high bar, 60s time limit

My thoughts:

  1. Deadlift Medley; This will be my most confident even, it will just come down to speed as I am confident in hitting their posted weights, especially if this is event #1 as posted.
  2. Viking Press; No actual experience with a viking press implement, but I feel like I should be able to muscle up a rep or two here.
  3. Sandbag to Wheelbarrow Carry; Now that I’ve been playing with my 200lb bag, I am confident I can complete the 50’ carry. I’ve been doing 30s carries in my home gym with it, and hope I can cover the 50’ in that time. The wheelbarrow weight concerns me a bit and also whether it is a single or double tire wheelbarrow. The balance, stability could play a role here.
  4. Tire flip; No clue here. I have a decent sized tire at home, but honestly not sure how it will relate to the tire I’ll be flipping here. I may try to get some flips in the coming months to help work on a little technique, but this may be a bit more of a “lift really hard and see if it moves” type technique for me.
  5. Sandbag throw; I went out to my storage shed and pulled out an old sandbag with handles I had out there. I’ll try to get its weight to a mid-range weight from the comp and start practicing my release timing with some throws. I think the release timing is going to be my biggest obstacle here.

I’m down a couple quick lbs due to skipping a meal, lol. Working nights again this week, so will take a day or two to flip my schedule around.
I got this workout done after a 2.5hr nap following my night shift.
Mid-workout photo below to keep my legs accountable for this Transformation challenge.

Nice work. I’m never complaining my basement is too short for carries ever again. Haha

I appreciate the kind words! The turns with the bag are definitely more difficult than the few steps in a straight line. Thanks for stopping in and commenting!

Incoming excuses. My neck was a little sore today from wrestling with my 3 year old (yes, you read that correctly lol). If this isn’t a sign to do some direct neck work, I’m not sure what is. I then spent the day at a work meeting/presentation (5hr) where I did not choose the correct seat and had my head turned through a lot of the presentation. Fast forward to getting home with a stiff neck/upper back, they nearly locked up on me after these first few clean and presses. I barely fought the 225lbs up, and could barely turn my head, so I moved on to deadlifts.

So my upcoming strongman competition has the trap bar weight as 600lbs, so I wanted to make sure I could at least hit that. I’m going to email the convenor to clarify a couple of questions I have because part of me thinks that they might be doing high-handle trap bar deadlifts. Once these things are clarified, I think I’m going to run a 5/3/1 cycle into the competition using a little more event specific exercises.
