Lower Back Disc Problems

hey fellas, ive had lower back problems for a few years now after a car accident. they never treated it because we didnt know the problem existed, we just knew i had a fractured T-9 and shattered left arm.

i have an appointment with a spine surgeon in 2 weeks to get it really looked at, but i went to a chiropractor today just to try to get some relief. i know i have a disc problem and pinched nerves, he told me what i already knew, just gave me electro shock therapy to numb the pain a few hours.

he also said the reason my deadlift and squat lifts are so weak is because of this. have any of you guys had problems like this? if so, what was done?

What type of pain are you having? Is it in the back or in the legs?

Whatever you do, make sure you’re dealing with the most competent doctor/surgeon you can find.

I had a herniated disk in my lower back almost 8 years ago. I tried quite a few things including a chirporactor(like you did) and physical therapy. None of that helped at all. I had Microdiscectomy surgery after exhausting all options with the exception of injections. Haven’t had a single issue since…

Good luck buddy.

its in my lower back and shoots down the back of my legs, sometimes my legs and back tingle and go numb. any kind of stretching anymore hurts like all hell. i cant stand for more than 30 minutes without it bothering me, the only way i can get any sort of relief is to throw my hips forward and push my chest back.

im hoping to god i can just do injections or something, i really dont want surgery due to the fact i have 5 years of school left and cant really afford the surgery. i have my doctor appointment in 2 weeks but just trying to find out as much as i can right now

Fanastic resources for low back troubles are both books written by Stuart McGill. You can find information on his work at:

Low Back Disorders is more clinical than Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance but they are both excellent books.

If you do have good days amongst the bad days, there is plenty of information in there that may help you avoid surgery. Most people with disc injuries tend to carry positions/postures/movement patterns that perpetuate the noxious stimuli on the disc. Those books will help you figure out what is keeping you injured.

good luck

Crap, dude. I think surgery would be better than another accident leading to paralysis, right? You definitely need help, and it’s more than some injections. Just wait and see what the doc says.

Try to understand that the posistion you put yourself in is lumbar extension.
It sounds like the accident took your nornal curve out , or when you corretted for the pain of T-9 fracture you assumed a posistion that made you hold that posistion till the pain was gone and chronicly shortened your muscles.

I listened to a surgeon speak at at a back pain debate in London and he agreed that doing surgery is the absolute most risky thing they can do on your back. Everything else should be tried first.

yup you nailed it right on the head bushy. the last doc i talked to said take some tylenol 3 and muscle relaxers, stretch and youll be fine. i dont think she knew what the hell she was talking about. as for lifting i may have to give it up until i see the spine surgeon, which kills me because lifting is my best stress reliever and its hard for me to stay away.

i recently spoke to someone who told me he had Microdisectomy surgery on his disc and the pain was gone after a day and he hasnt had any problems since, and that it was a relatively simple process. but i greatly appreciate the advice from you all, ill definitely put it to use. at this point the pain is so fucking bad im desperate for any way to get some fucking relief.
