Tonight was the first time Ive done low box squats and I was humbled. Last time I maxed out on my squat(a few weeks out of the hospital) I was around 405. Today I my 3rm was 295 without sacrificing form. My question is, are low box squats usually more difficult than regular squats? It definitely showed my weaknesses. (Btw, my "box" was 4 plates stacked to 10in.)
Yes. Most of Westside guys when The Book of Methods came out were box squatting around 90% of what they free squat. I'm around that mark myself. It's because you don't get to use your stretch reflex nearly as much. Especially if your relaxing your hip flexors and hold the seated position for a second on the box.
