Wow, I’m originally from the Utica area.
Anyway, IF you want to stay in NY state and you want skiing, etc., by far the nicest spot is Lake Placid, which is in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. It’s about a 3 to 3.5 hour drive from you. Scenicly, culturally, etc., there’s no other area in New York state that has its charm. (The winter Olympics were held there in 1980, FYI). I don’t know what you’re looking to spend, but if you’re looking to go really high-end, the Lake Placid Lodge and the Mirror Lake Inn are your two best bets there. Not cheap, but both (especially the LPL) are gorgeous. There are also a slew of more economical accomodations in and around Lake Placid.
Hey, I heard that Canada has real nice ski resort type of lodges. My wife and I are looking to get away from my parent’s house this Thanksgiving, and would love a nice lodge with snow, a fire place, coffee and a view.
That’s all we need. It doesn’t have to be a place to ski.
I live just outside of Utica, NY, right in the middle of the state, but don’t know where to go to get away.
Canada (north of NY) is not too far, so if somebody knows of a good place that’s around 5 hours or less from Central NY, in any direction, it would be greatly appreciated.[/quote]
