Looking for Lodge Around NY

Hey, I heard that Canada has real nice ski resort type of lodges. My wife and I are looking to get away from my parent's house this Thanksgiving, and would love a nice lodge with snow, a fire place, coffee and a view.

That’s all we need. It doesn’t have to be a place to ski.

I live just outside of Utica, NY, right in the middle of the state, but don’t know where to go to get away.

Canada (north of NY) is not too far, so if somebody knows of a good place that’s around 5 hours or less from Central NY, in any direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

If it was Alberta, Sask or BC I could help ya, but I’m not familiar w/ the east side. I’m sure some of the eastern members will be able to help.
If you’ve never been to Canada, its a beautiful country & the snow is definitely flying already out here.

Yea, I like going to Canada, but I just don’t do it enough. Actually, if not for the Navy, I wouldn’t have gotten out much at all. I’ve lived 4 hours from NY City, and have only been there twice in my life.

I always wanted to check out the West side of Canada too. Some time when we get more settled in and have money saved up we’re going to do a lot of travelling.

Not in Canada but Stowe is a reasonable drive from Utica and it was a pretty cool place when I went there 10 years ago.

Great site, thanks!

I’m still browsing it, but the romantic package looks good. I like looks of the Sleigh Ride too.

I’d want a fireplace, but of course it’s a bit pricier. I should surprise my wife with it (or something like it) though. It’s not like we do it all the time, so I can splurge a little.

Any other suggestions?

There’s not much snow there around T-Giving time…but, if there is they have a really cute ice skating rink overlooking the Catskill Mountains and cross country skiing and carriage rides, GREAT hiking, beautiful gardens, an awesome spa and there is a cute town with lots to do at the bottom of the mountain if you get bored.
It’s very romantic for you and the wife and the food is amazing!

Wow, I’m originally from the Utica area.

Anyway, IF you want to stay in NY state and you want skiing, etc., by far the nicest spot is Lake Placid, which is in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. It’s about a 3 to 3.5 hour drive from you. Scenicly, culturally, etc., there’s no other area in New York state that has its charm. (The winter Olympics were held there in 1980, FYI). I don’t know what you’re looking to spend, but if you’re looking to go really high-end, the Lake Placid Lodge and the Mirror Lake Inn are your two best bets there. Not cheap, but both (especially the LPL) are gorgeous. There are also a slew of more economical accomodations in and around Lake Placid.

Don’t forget the Saranac Lake area. I have stayed up there countless times but not in a romantic lodge setting.

Or you could try the Old Forge area too. Very close to Utica but I prefer the Saranac/Lake Placid area.

Regarding the Grey Fox Inn in Stowe they had these Jacuzzi/hot tub things in the bathroom and you could see out the window to Mount Mansfield. It was pretty cool but the bathroom was on the inside of the room so you had to look across the bedroom and out the the windows. Not ideal but still cool.

They also had this pancake breakfast thing included in the room package. I never knew there were so many ways to prepare pancakes. It was awesome.

Or you could just go to the Turning Stone Casino in Rome and waste all your money.

The Turning Stone Casino is too close to home, and I’ve been there enough times already (plus I’m not a big gambler).

I feel the same about Old Forge, although I’m sure there are nice places there I haven’t seen, I’ve been up there a lot.

Lake Placid looks interesting too. I always hear people say good things about it, but never went there.

I know I’m probably missing out on a lot of great places in upstate, NY, especially durring camping season.

I’ll keep digging and comparing.

All of the links helped A LOT.

Thanks.
