I've decided to try something new with my roadwork after listening to a few podcasts with Mark Sisson, an author who runs the Daily Apple blog. You can read more on your own, but in a nutshell it's this: In order to get your body away from using carb/sugars as fuel for your workouts, you've got to become more efficient at using fat. You do that by maintaining a lower heart rate during runs, hence staying in the aerobic zone. As you get better at using fat for fuel, your times increase - but your heart rate is much lower. Efficiency is the key here, he says. And in the end, it's supposed to help you lean out while having more gas in the tank and eliminating sugar cravings (which I do get after heavy anaerobic work).
So I'm giving it a shot. And during today's run, I made sure my heart rate didn't go above 140 bpm, which means I slowed down a lot. It's a little frustrating to go that slow - you don't feel like you're working very hard - but it is part of the plan.
