Loftearmen's MMA Log

I don’t know any of those subs. That’s definitely something I will have to ask my coach about though! Thanks for 5he tips.

I haven’t logged in a few days because the website was messed up and wouldn’t let me. I did a lot of shadow boxing, bag work and slipping/footwork drills though along with some strength training, bodyweight stuff and rope skipping.

Today:
Clean grip muscle snatches superset with 1 min of jump rope with no rest.

PM:
BJJ Class

I found out today my coach is closing down the school because he has to have knee surgery :frowning: I am pretty bummed out over it. I need to take a short break from combat training to let my injuries heal up anyway. I will do whatever I can without pain for a couple weeks and then check out some different schools.

I went to check out Guy Mezger’s school today. Holy shit it was amazing!!! They have boxing, muay thai, bjj, wrestling, catch wrestling, judo and mma classes plus a full weight room, 2 mats and an octagon. They also have showers and a locker room which comes in handy. The only problem is that it is super expensive. I did a wrestling class this morning. The instruction was top notch and the students were really serious and very skilled and conditioned. I did notice that no one there ever does a light roll; it was either balls to the wall going at it or nothing at all. That has its pros and cons I guess. In any event, I will check out a few other schools but this one was super bad ass. I will go back there at some point (probably after I pass my boards and am making a lot more money).

Nice little session. I was short on time so my rest periods were super short.

I can’t squat heavy weights on account of my knees so I did a bunch of bodyweight stuff instead and it was brutal.

30 sec on/30 sec rest for 30 minutes

Bodyweight Squats
Jump Rope
Wrestlers Lunges

I did not pace myself at all the first 15 minutes. I tried to get as many rope skips and bw squats as possible. The best I got were 26 squats in 30 secs and 77 rope skips in 30 secs with a heavy beaded rope.

I went to a different school tonight, Wolfpack MMA in Rockwall. It was a pretty good school. The instruction was good and there were some other big guys to train with which was nice. Tonigjt was the first time I rolled with a guy as big as me. He wasn’t terribly athletic but at least I got to feel what 300lbs felt like. I tapped him twice with an Americana and a head and arm choke from scarf hold. Then he got side mount on me when I failed an osoto gari (it was an experiment, they started on knees at this school so I didn’t know what to do since I usually start from feet).

Then I rolled with a juiced up collegiate wrestler who was seriously fucking aggressive but had no idea how to wrestle in a submission format. It was his first day at bjj. He was hard to handle bit I was still able to get some good transitions on him. These always worked out a little wonky because he handled himself totally different than most folks in bjj being that he had a wrestling background. Instead of glowing he would just fight and grind like a motherfucker in an attempt to get what he wanted. Occassionally it would work but most of the time it wouldn’t because I was a good bit bigger and stronger than him.

In any event, there are some good people to train with, good coaches, a decent location and decent prices so that’s probably where I will sign up.

Awesome stuff Lofty. Sorry to hear you’re still carrying a few injuries. Do you reckon you’ll be over them soon enough?

Everything felt okay last night while I was training but I can really feel my right biceps tendon this morning. My knees are getting better quickly but this damn biceps tendonitis isn’t getting any better at all. I will probably have to get a cortisone shot.

Tonight was the last night that JediJJ was open :frowning:

We drilled some escapes from side mount and scarf hold and got some rolls in. It was a pretty good session all in all but it sucks that I can’t go there anymore. I have learned a lot from Pat over the past few months.

I did the following as a circuit with 2 min rest between rounds

After quite a while off of combat training due to a lack of time, I am back and training in bjj. During my time off I was still able to lift weights a lot since I train at home and can easily do it whenever I have some time available. I put on a lot of muscle and am looking more like myself as a powerlifter which has ultimately culminated in a 475lb bench press pr and not a lot of endurance haha. I also suffered a severely torn hamstring about 8 weeks ago which is why I decided to go back to bjj. Powerlifting injuries tend to be pretty bad.

In any event, I am back bitches!

Just did a little accessory work tonight at the gay ass commercial gym with my wife.

Wow, my cardio is pretty bad right now. It doesn’t help that I have a chest cold but it was still a pretty poor showing. I wound up doing 60 squats, 40 push ups and 40 sit ups total. I will gradually increase the volume and decrease the rest time. I should be right back where I was conditioning-wise in a month or two.

I wasn’t able to go to bjj today because my wife accidentally took my keys with her to work.

This was my first time to do snatches with a barbell. I am sure my form was not very good but these were great for conditioning. I took very short breaks between sets to keep my heart rate high.

I went to the 6am bjj class. There was only 1 other student there and it was his 3rd class so rolling with him wasn’t really rolling. I just tried to talk him through the roll, punish him a little bit when he made big mistakes and then go right back to helping him through it. We drilled some standing guard pass techniques that I already knew but it was good to hear it from a different teacher and get his twist on it. Plus, I needed to drill them more so I could build confidence and hone in the technique a bit.

That is some teamwork right there. As an aside it is also a great reason to have spare keys a bunch of places. Easy with home/apartment keys, might be more expensive depending on vehicles though. I know a bunch of people who never get around to getting spares for there cars/trucks because each set is hundreds of dollars. Great work on getting back after an injury.

Robert A
