Lifting Partner Down: Injury Question

About 5 weeks back, my friend that I go to the gym with developed some lower abdomen pain after trying out some crazy leg machine with a seatbelt and going as high as could go (it could be something else, but that’s the only stray hair). Anyway, he told me he had pain in his gut and that his right nut hurt. After a week of him crying that he thought he had a hernia, he finally went to the doctor. The doctor told him he didn’t have a hernia, it was epididimitus(sp?) and gave him some anti-inflammatories.

After a week of these, he says the pain is less, but when he’s tried running, it resurges. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Going alone has sucked and I’m trying to convince him to go back to the doctor.

Pffft, frick that, he’s already given that doctor a go. Time to get a 2nd opinion i think.

My 1st guess was hernia as well but, i’m no doctor. He should go to a guy who specialises in sport injuries for a more accurate assessment.

The epididimis is the tube that connects the testicle to the body. Sometimes they become twisted (called a torsion). These are very painfull. sometimes the doctor can untwist them but sometimes the swelling can be enought to keep them from returning to there natural position. IN this case anti-inflams are used to reduce the swelling and allow the testicle to return to its natural position.

I second what redsol1 said. I think the only thing you can do is rest and take anti-inflammatories. Given the area that is injured, I would also suggest avoiding any activity that is a straining as this will likely increase pain. Sorry I couldn’t come up with anything better.

The epididymis is the semen resevoir on top of the testicles, it helps make em lumppy.

Inflammation of this area should be cause for concern.

What was the specific motion when the pain began? What type of pain is your partner experiencing? If its a shooting pain, check his lumbar spine, there could be a disc herniation impinging a nerve.

Just try a different doc.

You have quite possibly the coolest avatar I have ever seen!!!

If he had testicular torsion, he’d know. It’s pain on par with passing a kidney stone. In 30% of cases, it’ll kill the testicle within 12 hours.

It generally takes a week or two to recover from epididymitis. God forbid you could humor the doctor for another seven days.
