Downloading the files enables the child molestors. Supporting (not you, the downloader who was arrested) this kind of thing is just as bad as holding the camera.

Even if that is all true, the perv is still an accessory to any crimes committed against the children in the creation of the porn. You really think supporting such a thing should go unpunished?

Exactly, and let’s face it - there is a distinct difference in the probability of an Anarchist Cookbook reader making/using a bomb and a kiddie porn enthusiast molesting a child.
Sex is one of the most powerful motivators on the planet. Watching things go boom!..isn’t.
While I doubt all people who crank it to kiddie porn are scoping out playgrounds in search of children to kidnap, the simple fact of them flying under the radar (many instances with close relationships to children - fathers, uncles, teachers, etc…) makes even the temptation of such an act something best nipped in the bud.
Being a victim of child abuse myself, I can tell you that, its far worse than you imagine, trust me if you had experienced it you wouldn’t condone anyone even watching it. Wouldn’t the fact that they are watching it make one assume that they were aroused by it?
Increasing the chance that they would perform the act, i think the OP did the right thing; taking a potential child molester of the streets is never a bad thing.

I’m not sure. The argument against what you did is weak, and it really doesn’t even boil down to semantics. Having and possessing child pornography is dispicable, and it’s a federal crime. You were a role model citizen, and I don’t think you have to worry too much about any sort of legal reprocussions. No jury or judge in the world will side with the guy.
I can see where an internal dilemma could arise, to a certain extent, about basically pulling the guy along… But come on, don’t look at child porn, and there won’t be an issue.

There are some situations where there is simply no doubt as to what you need to do. It’s not like the guy had one video of a fifteen year old girl stripping. There are degrees, some of which cannot be ignored.
