Israeli Spy Ring Busted!

What’s classified as “actual news” by the mainstream media anymore really boggles the mind and here is another example. About the only place you’ll here about this stuff besides the internet is the WaPo or NYT. I’ve been following this story for quite some time and it looked like it was just going to just fade away - perhaps not.

Here’s some of the latest on this “the public doesn’t need to know, non-news item”.

Israeli Spy Ring Busted! Developing…
Wed May 04, 2005

Larry Anthony Franklin, 58, a Pentagon analyst whose specialty is Iran, was arrested by federal agents today when he turned himself. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., later today.

Franklin was observed last year by federal agents revealing top secret information to two employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), longtime foreign policy director Steve Rosen, and his deputy Keith Weissman, at a restaurant in Arlington, Virginia. A raid on his home turned up 83 classified U.S. government documents [.pdf]. According to the indictment, “approximately 38 were classified ‘Top Secret.’ 37 were classified ‘Secret,’” and “approximately 8” were marked “Confidential.”

The real stunner: “The dates of these documents spanned three decades.”

This, I think, gives us some indication that Franklin’s arrest is about to dredge up something much larger than anyone now imagines. Remember, the FBI counterintelligence stumbled on Franklin in the course of a much more extensive investigation that has been going on for at least two years. According to the Washington Post:

“The counterintelligence probe, which is different from a criminal investigation, focuses on a possible transfer of intelligence more extensive than whether Franklin passed on a draft presidential directive on U.S. policy toward Iran, the sources said. The FBI is examining whether highly classified material from the National Security Agency, which conducts electronic intercepts of communications, was also forwarded to Israel, they said.”

So much for the preemptive attempts by Israel’s amen corner to deride the charges as much ado about nothing: a draft presidential directive, as David Frum claimed in National Review, that anyone who had the 35 cents to pay for a copy of the Washington Post could have access to. NSA intercepts are the crown jewels of our intelligence hoard, which could not only reveal specific and very sensitive information, but might also indicate U.S. sources and methods of intelligence-gathering.

I have written about this case extensively, and will surely be writing more. The trial should be interesting, to say the least. Suffice to say now that Franklin’s treason is just the tip of the iceberg: what we are looking at is a longstanding conspiracy by Israeli agents inside the U.S. government to not only funnel classified materials to Tel Aviv, but to manipulate and bend U.S. foreign policy to serve Israeli interests.

The indictment also states that Franklin handed over classified materials to “a foreign official and to members of the news media on other occasions.”

Which “foreign official”? Gee, I wonder if anyone in the Israeli embassy is packing his or her bags and hightailing it back home.

Guess which “members of the news media” – now that’s a fun game to play.

This is one trial that is going to be very interesting. Get out the popcorn, and the dip-and-chips: maybe they’ll run it on Court TV…

CORRECTION: Franklin has not been indicted. The arrest warrant was generated by the complaint, which was backed up by an affidavit setting forth probable cause.

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, the FBI has stumbled on the largest espionage ring ever discovered inside the United States. The U.S. Justice Department is now holding nearly 100 Israeli citizens with direct ties to foreign military, criminal and intelligence services.

The spy ring reportedly includes employees of two Israeli-owned companies that currently perform almost all the official wiretaps for U.S. local, state and federal law enforcement.

The following are all separate incidents AFTER 9/11:

5 Israelis detained for `puzzling behavior’ after WTC tragedy
HAARETZ
Five Israelis who had worked for a moving company based in New Jersey are being held in U.S. prisons for what the Federal Bureau of Investigation has described as “puzzling behavior” following the terror attack on the World Trade Center in New York last Tuesday.

The five were transferred out of the FBI’s facility on Saturday morning and are now being held in two prisons in New Jersey by the Immigration and Naturalization Services. They are charged with illegally residing in the United States and working there without permits.

The Foreign Ministry said in response that it had been informed by the consulate in New York that the FBI had arrested the five for “puzzling behavior.” They are said to have had been caught videotaping the disaster and shouting in what was interpreted as cries of joy and mockery.

Base spokesman Ed Buczek said two Israeli men attempted to enter the base about 10:30 a.m. They were hired by a moving-and-storage company to pick up some household goods in base housing, he said.

Base personnel then inspected the van. Military dogs trained to detect bombs were called in.

“The military dogs were alerted to a scent in the cab of the truck,” Buczek said. “Guards closed access to the base and notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.”

Israeli men arrested after high-speed chase in Unicoi County
ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) - No bond was set Monday for two Israeli men who were arrested after leading the Unicoi County sheriff on a high-speed chase in a rented moving truck.

William B. Lawson, one of the lawyers appointed to represent the Israeli men, said they rented a truck and planned to haul furniture, but accidentally got off the interstate and got lost.

The sheriff said he saw the men throw something from the truck while they were being pursued. Officers scouring the area later found a vial containing an unknown substance along the roadway, he said.

Lawson said the vial contained a “fuel source,” but he added that it hasn’t been identified and authorities were treating it with caution.

Once the men were apprehended, officers also found a “Learn to Fly” brochure in the truck, leading Harris and others to express concern about security at the Nuclear Fuel Services plant in Erwin.

“I got a sick feeling when I saw it,” Harris said.

Yeah, it does occasionally make mainstream but it’s not as important as say the “runaway bride” or a California car chase apparently.

What are you saying JTF?

Are you implying the US was pushed into the role of enforcer by covert Israeli operations designed to mimic terrorist attacks?

Are you implying that the media is focusing elsewhere, because if it isn’t announced as prime time national news it never happened?

If that isn’t what you are trying to say, maybe you could clear up what you are really saying for us…

Nice to see another Antiwar.com reader on these forums, not to mention a sensible person…

As an aside, recently some Israeli spies were caught frauduently trying to obtain New Zealand passports. I guess NZ being such a small relatively unimportant peaceful country they could travel and do their dirty work without suspicion. The NZ Prime MInister was pissed.

Gladly Vroom - Your pretty much right on. After 9/11, and because of 9/11, a HUGE Israeli spy operation was uncovered in the US that FOX News, believe it or not, did that really great 4 part series on (linked above) - unfortunately it was quickly yanked from their web site. (I think that’s about the time FOX took a “hard right”) There were also many mainstream news articles online and in the print media after 9/11 about Israel’s involvement or complacency that quickly went down the memory hole as well.

An article in Jane’s Defence even questioned the lack of media coverage on this issue:

How do you take the official story of 9/11 seriously when you realize there’s another major story that they’d rather not have the general populace know about? Meanwhile we’re being warned about al-Qaeda planning other terror attacks at the same time Israelis are being caught all over the US in the vicinity of nuclear plants and causing naval bases to be shut down. What’s even more suspicious is a naval base being shut down and it doesn’t even make national news - yet some yahoo forgets their lunch box on a park bench and they never fail to show a segment on TV of the fuckin’ bomb robot picking it up.

The CURRENT spy investigation from the original post is a separate but related investigation. It goes DIRECTLY into the heart of the Pentagon and Doug Feith’s “Office of Special Plans” http://www.sourcewatch.org/wiki.phtml?title=Office_of_Special_Plans (where all the great intelligence on Iraq came from) - the gist of the investigation involves Israel having DIRECT influence on US foreign policy in the Middle East.

FBI looks at Pentagon worker in Israel spy probe
Report: Suspect has ties to Wolfowitz, Feith
August 27, 2004

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The FBI has evidence that a person who has been working at high levels in the Pentagon may be a spy for Israel, senior U.S. officials confirmed to CNN on Friday.

The suspect could have been in a position to influence Bush administration policy toward Iran and Iraq, the senior official said.

The network said the suspect has ties to two senior Pentagon officials: Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith.

WASHINGTON - The No. 3 man at the Pentagon, Douglas J. Feith, undersecretary of defense for policy, is resigning his Pentagon position, FOX News learned Wednesday.

Feith’s reasons for resigning are unclear, but Pentagon sources say the undersecretary will offer “family reasons” as his explanation. His last day will come at some point in the summer, the sources said.

Feith’s office is the subject of an FBI investigation as well as two Congressional investigations, one by the Senate Intelligence Committee. Feith helped set up an Office of Special Plans in the Near East and South Asia desk of the Pentagon to cherry-pick Iraq intelligence and create a case for Iraq having weapons of mass destruction and having operational links with al-Qaeda.

Wolfowitz: Man of the Year
THE JERUSALEM POST
Oct. 1, 2003
NO question: This was Paul Wolfowitz’s year. On September 15, 2001, at a meeting in Camp David, he advised President George W. Bush to skip Kabul and train American guns on Baghdad. In March 2003, he got his wish. In the process, Wolfowitz became the most influential US deputy defense secretary ever - can you so much as name anyone else who held the post?

What’s not in dispute is that Wolfowitz is the principal author of the doctrine of preemption, which framed the war in Iraq and which, when it comes to it, will underpin US action against other rogue states.

When President Bush says, “America will not permit the world’s most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world’s most destructive weapons” - that’s Wolfowitz talking.

The “Hegelian Dialectic” is the framework for guiding our thoughts and actions into conflicts that lead us to a predetermined solution.

Problem - Reaction - Solution Paradigm

 1. The government creates or exploits a problem blaming it on others

 2. The people react by asking the government for help willing to give up their rights

 3. The government offers the solution that was planned long before the crisis

http://video.csupomona.edu/HotTalk/KarenKwiatkowski-245.asx

Recently retired from the Pentagon, she was firsthand witness to the dubious pre-war intelligence used in the run-up to the war in Iraq. She says point blank the intelligence was saying Iraq was not a threat.

She is also pretty blunt in talking about the neocons from the Office of Special Plans where the spy scandal is originating. (although she doesn’t talk about the investigation itself) The interview was about a year ago but it’s pretty much proof we need to do a little “house cleaning”.

To quote Neoconservative Richard Perle:

“If we just let our vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely, and we don’t try to piece together clever diplomacy but just wage a total war, our children will sing great songs about us years from now.”

One of the architects of our current foreign policy. Last time I heard a quote like that, it was being shouted in German.

Selling US Weapons To China
22 July 1998
Israel has illegally re-exported advanced US defense technology to China. The problem was first recognized in 1992 when the State Department’s inspector general reported that there was “overwhelming” evidence of a “systematic and growing pattern” of transfers. Israel has been the primary supplier of advanced defense technology to China since 1989. (OUR technology)

Dustin
Actually Dustin, Jeff wandered in here by mistake. Anyone “on the right” is not allowed to engage in open discussion on the topic of Israel other than to throw in a few Jewish, anti-semitic conspiracy comments on occasion. If criticizing Israel is by itself anti-semitic, then there are an awful lot of self-hating Jews out there.

What I’ve presented in my posts are verifiable facts, not “made-up” conspiracy. Did you know you can stop a post dead in it’s tracks by bringing up real issues about Israel, try it sometime. You can say whatever you want about any other ally - Canadians, the French (“cheese eating surrender monkeys” a popular one), Germans, etc. You can do a search of the forum yourself to see example after example. For all the jabbering that goes on in here you can find but two people willing to broach this subject and any critical mention of a certain COUNTRY will bring discussion to a grinding halt.

It doesn’t seem to matter to the average red, white and blue blooded AMERICAN apparently, that an allied foreign government sells our most advanced weapons technology to China all the while having spies at the TOP LEVELS of the PENTAGON directing our foreign policy. NO, the real danger was Saddam and getting rid of his WMD’s that weren’t there to begin with - but if you see where the intelligence about Iraq’s WMD’s came from and the path it took, you’ll suddenly have an “ah-ha” moment.

Unfortunately many will never have that “ah-ha” moment because their thoughts are being guided by the very element that doesn’t WANT THEM TO KNOW - so much so, they’re not even allowed to TALK about it… all the proof you need is right HERE.
“Are we not allowed to say anything negative about Israel?”
Did the “eerie silence” answer your question, Dustin?
