Immune System Claim

From the Steve Michaelik article:

“Some guys would even take snake venom because it suppressed the immune system,” he says. “We found that when you suppress the immune system, your muscles grow. The problem was, guys would always get the flu so they ended up dropping that one.”
“If it supposedly helped us build muscle, we’d find a way to get a hold of it and we’d try it,” he says.

Now… WTF? Is this true? no, not the shit about the snake venom, generally about the immune system… How come this is never discussed? Does this mean someone might actually have a better chance gaining when sick? O_O

Haha yeah I know sounds insane with the venom shit. But seriously now - isn’t there any bit of logic behind the thinking that the immune system has some kind of function limiting muscle growth? I dunno, just asking…

Surely a fully functional and healthy immune system is necessary for recovery and growth. The whole idea of training while sick in order to bypass your immune system is counterproductive to the process of building new mass. Your body simply isn’t going to view it as a priority because it will be fighting off illness before anything else.

As Holymac said, that’s like saying a terminally ill person is primed for optimal growth.

Even if you took immunosuppressive drugs (and you’d have to be crazier than a shithouse rat to deliberately compromise your natural defenses), there is still no basis for believing that your immune system somehow inhibits growth. Think about it: when you train, you are inflicting trauma on the body. Your immune system isn’t gonna stop you from recovering.

Although he had a great physique, the guy is clearly a couple of supplements short of a stack.

I spent 10 years needing immunoglobulin infusions, my progress over the last year has not been noticeably poorer than the progress made during those years. Purely anecdotal counter to an anecdote, hurrah for noscience.
