Thailand is such a wonderful country, I wish I was able to stay there like you guys do. I hope someday I can. I will be visiting the Land of Smiles for the fourth time this coming January.
The country does have a bad rep because of the nightlife, but there is a lot more to it. It has some of the best scuba diving and beautiful islands you will find anywhere. The cheap food, meals costing less than $1, is just awesome. The uniqueness of the thai people and their culture is never dull.
Muay Thai is an awesome sport and T-Nation members could definitely appreciate the level of conditioning and dedication that the practioners have.
The majority of the bargirls do not come from Burma, they typically come from the poor agricultural area in the north east of the country called Issan. BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai police are warning tourists of a new scam.
Members of a Thai transvestite gang have confessed to hiding strong sedatives in their mouths and spitting them down the throats of victims during deep kissing. Then they rob the drugged tourists.
The confession came from three attractive transvestites arrested in Bangkok last week. Police said they’d robbed a Bangladeshi businessman of more than $7,300 in cash and valuables.
Police said the victim told investigators he met the transvestites in a bar and invited them all back to his apartment. After kissing one, he said he felt dizzy and passed out. When he woke up, his cash, watch, mobile phone and notebook computer were gone.
A police lieutenant colonel has this warning for tourists: “Don’t rush to kiss a stranger on the mouth or you will end up in a deep sleep.”

In 1997, the World Health Organization said 20 percent of sex workers in rural Thai areas were HIV-positive, compared with only 7 percent in Bangkok. Studies show that only 50 percent of men who visit sex workers in rural areas consistently use condoms.
In the meantime, health officials are pessimistic that they will be able to rein in the killer virus anytime soon.
Many men now avoid brothels for fear of contracting AIDS and are having affairs with acquaintances or women at the office without using condoms, health experts say. And since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis, schoolgirls and university students – in a trend mirrored across the region – are contracting HIV by trading sexual favors for gifts such as clothes and cell phones from well-off men and passing it on to their boyfriends.
I guess overall the population has a 1-2% rate of infection, which is good, and a trubute to the Thai government’s health programs.(Hurray Thailand!) But that figure includes all the old people, and Asian are notoriously long lived(unless they have AIDS). Stay away from the brothels and colleges. Otherwise, enjoy!

I was reading through the thread, and all I want to say is you are all absolutely right. AIDS is rampant, at least 70% of the women have it. The police are corrupt and will try to plant drugs on you to throw you in prison. Even if you bribe them, they will take your money and still run you through the prison system. 10 years is a lucky sentence for littering. Bangkok is one of the few place I have been that hasnt been tainted by American commercialism (even though it exists, the Thai culture is still very real and exciting). . . Admittedly, I havent yet travelled the world as extensively as I would like. I was treated like royalty, got into virtually every high culture party that went on that week, the women were paranoid and adamant about wearing protection. the culture was rich and alive. The people were nice. The food was great.
We saw mui thai boxing at teh madison square gardens of Thailand. We nearly got hit head on in a toog toog by a bus. The exchange rate made spending money like playing monopoly. And every night was the craziest night of my life. . . the end of the week culminated with me quasi dating a chick who posed for Thailand penthouse or Playboy, who bought and fed me dinner.

I’m not sure that ‘the majority’ do. Most workers from Burma are illegal and wouldn’t risk being sent back by exposing themselves (no pun intended). Also the beauty of having a slave trade is that you have many ‘disposable’ assets, if you get my drift.
