Work is inundating and exhausting at the moment. I hope it levels out. The new owner is great and bringing a lot of work from his previous roofing company but I;m trying to get a handle on everything and get it under control. They routinely handed bids in late. I’ve never handed anything late. I may have to ease up on that though. It’s tough being type A sometimes.
Last night I had my first welding class. I was almost late because I put the wrong city in my phone gps. I ate my dinner while driving and getting fairly pissy. At least I know where to go now.
The first class was mostly safety and review of the different types of welding. We did a tour of the shop and each got to have a go at stick welding. I can’t see f.a. with the face plate down. I may pick up my own at Princess Auto with the adjustable darkening screen. I can’t wait for next week…
I bought one today. We went to Princess Auto which, because of the name, I always thought was car related. It’s not. It’s an amazing store of every tool you could need. I had a hard time leaving. I can fill all my welding need there for sure. They had a ton of helmets, gloves, leather jackets, fire retardant cotton jackets. Based on the short time I wore the leather one in class, I think cotton may be the way to go. Leather will be hot a.f.

At this point the power went out due to high gusts of wind. We have no light in the basement because the windows are old and sealed up. Fortunately I love candles and have a shit ton of them so we continued by candle light. We had 7 or 8 spread around the basement.

As we were putting our shoes away and getting ready to go upstairs, the power came back on. It was kind of fun and romantic to train by candlelight.
Sounds like a shopping trip is in the future. A set of good gloves and a cotton jacket will go a long way. If you are concerned about the fire retardant part, the old guys washed there clothes with borax. It will help them be flame retardant.
That’s some good information. I picked up a good pair of leather gauntlet gloves with deer hide palms. It’s difficult to get gloves for small women’s hands so the softer leather helps offset that a bit.
Tuesday night was my second welding class. The first half hour was electrical safety and set up. I really had no idea that a welder was like a giant battery. I had to make sure I really understood where the ground went and amperage. I have no real desire for a toni home perm while I learn to weld. I feel pretty comfortable with it now. The rest of the time was welding lines over and over on scrap. I think it’s getting a bit better. I improved my set up, leaning against the wall with one elbow on the work table and my face low near the work. I can appreciate the full face coverage now with sparks flying back. Without the extra support, my hands are too shaky and my vision isn’t great. My auto darkening helmet worked brilliantly.
Once you learn how to ground and weld it’s all a matter of how well you keep a straight line and not over doing your bead. Like anything, it comes with practice.
Fortunately I do well with repetition. One of the things my brother likes about it is the zen feeling of focus. I kind of felt like that when I was grinding my table legs. Kind of mindless but in a nice way…

Tomorrow my mom is coming down and she, my girls and I are going to a local art show hosted in various homes around the city. I went last year and had a lovely time. There are a ton of talented local artists.

Squats felt heavy. On Sunday we built our raised gardens. Building was easy, filling them with dirt was a long job. It lit my back up like crazy so I guess just hitting all my numbers is a win.
This coming weekend I’ll be picking up the plants to put in them. I’m thinking tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, maybe carrots and radishes.
