High Protein=Gout?

My uncle was just diagnosed with gout. He was eating approx, 200-300g of protein a day, and his doctor claims it is this high protein intake which created a lot of uric acid(I think that is what it was), and this caused the gout. What do you all think, would high protein levels cause this? I have trouble trusting medical doctors after all the bad experiences me and others I know have had with their ignorance on some things.

As I understand it, there is no problem with protein per se. However it does increase urea production which is toxic. It is therefore recommended to consume ample quantities of water (3L/day) to keep this concentration low.
