High Fat & Weight Training

Hi Guys,

What are peoples opinions on heavy weight training while on a high fat and very low carb diet - say around 40gs or below - will the body adapt and be able to lift as heavy. I tried it for 2 weeks but got scared when my lifts started dropping.

I’m guessing its quite possible that I didn’t give it enough time. Poliquin seems to favour it as far as I can tell, does anyone know if he has any of his power athletes on a similar diet.

Im not a scientist, but I’ve been using the anabolic diet (low c, high f and p) for the past 5 weeks and my lifts are getting stronger.

Extreme diets like this will work for some, but not for others. Whether a superstar athlete can eat like this should make little difference. It still may not work for you.

Learn from your experience.

I’m glad to hear this, because while I was doing the anabolic diet for the 14 days I felt great every where except the gym. Libido and general energy were way up. The worst thing though, was the ketone breath, it was so embarrassing. I’m hoping it is temporary, right?

Yes. During a period of restricted carbohydrate intake, the body will eventually adapt to burning fat for energy. You’ll also probably experience the strength gains many people experience since fat is easier on the body to digest, out of any other macronutrient, thus making it the perfect food for packing on strength.
I too am on the Anabolic Diet -I’m currently cutting and I’m using the 6 days of <30g and 1 carb up day method -and my bench has gone up about 45 pounds since (now benching 365 pounds).
Just make sure you’re eating enough dietary fat, which is a huge mistake many people make, since the diet industry has programmed our brains into thinking all fat is inherently evil. Your lifts were dropping probably because you

1 weren’t consuming enough overall
calories.

2 You weren’t consuming enough dietary fat.

3 Because your body was adapting to the restricted carb intake -it takes about two weeks. I’m sure if you waited until those two weeks were over while applying the other two methods, you’d have gotten stronger.
And be sure to have at least one carb up day every week.
