Heels Down/Heels Cue When Benching?

What does this mean and what is it supposed to accomplish?

I hear people say it all the time and I’ve even had it said to me, however I have no idea what it’s meant to accomplish.

I set up high on my traps, with a hard arch, and my legs back underneath my hips on my toes. I can get a solid leg drive this way, but I’m not doing anything with my heels.

I can see if you set up with your heels down, you may get some hip/glute activation that goes back up the chain, but otherwise I have no idea.

It’s mostly for guys that either bench on their toes or in a shirt, or both. It just meets to try and put their heels down even though they can’t because of their foot positioning.

If you drive off your toes (either with your feet in front of you or your feet underneath your body) you have a tendency to raise your butt. Driving with your heels will allow you to get a good amount of leg drive without your ass leaving the bench.

^^^^ this. most people push through their toes which leads to the ass coming off the bench. i bench on my toes with my feet back under my hips. i actively force my heals down but they don’t actually move because of my foot position. since i’m forcing my heels down my ass stays down. actually i don’t even have my ass on the bench. it’s just lightly touching it, more or less hovering over the bench. if i was to push through my toes it would come up very quickly. forcing the heels down keeps my ass in contact throughout the lift.
