Saw a pic on T-Nation page the other day about the haney shrug, looks like a barbell row only your holding the barbell from the back.
Good exercise?

If your ass isn’t to big!
any weight I use on it pulls me back so i spend more time trying to keep myself up right rather than shrugging.

and yeah, my butt gets in the way
I like the movement personally, but not with the smith machine. I find my grip is best with and easy curl bar. Seems to hit the right spot but I haven’t been using it long.
It’s an okay excersize. It’s just another variation of a shrug. If you want to see superior trap development do power cleans instead of any shurgging excersize and you will see incredible growth

Cleans are dynamite. Cleans and shrugs are superior to cleans only.

Ditto that
It’s a great exercise. If your ass gets in the way, make use of the smith machine so you can lean away a bit. While ‘regular’ shrugs may build your traps “upwards”, unless you take a better approach, they will look like crap from the side and rear.

The forward lean is key, good call.
This is my primary trap builder (and rack pulls I guess). 5 or 6 sets of these then 3 sets of HS neutral grip shrugs and they’re toast. Allows for a much better stretch than regular BB shrugs IMO.

Rack pulls personally. My ass gets in the way of the regular bar Haney shrug but if King Coleman could do em with 700lbs I guess we are just whinning.
