They might not be the strongest but they have some of the best muscle motor unit recruitment and stabilizer strength of any athletes. I remember hearing Poliquin say once that you can take a typical 145 lb male elite gymnast and get him on a good strength training program for 6 weeks and he’ll be benching around 350 lbs. The key to this is the various tempos they use in their events…sometimes isometric, sometimes slow, sometimes extremely explosive…Also they only do bodyweight exercises, which leads to even better overall strength…as well…most of these guys are genetically gifted toward the fast-twitch, strength development side.
