Grip Strength

New toys to improve my gripping. Really cool to pinch.

Love this shit

Show us your gripping toys!!!
Jon

That arm of yours looks as if it could cause some very serious damage if you decided to hit someone flush in the face.

I know the above comment has nothing to do with grip training, but I am rarely wrong with these sorts of observations, and could not resist.

I could show you my griping toys, but the GF is againts this idea.

Jonathan,

Do you do any plate pinching? Here’s a pic of me doing 4 ten pound plates (not much but you get the idea).

I like the IronMind Blockbuster pinch grip block.

I was recently given the number 2 captain of crush grippers. Have any of you guys used the grippers before and would any of you recommend them?

They were a present I never considered buying a pair before, but I would like to have a go at the number 3 grippers now that I’ve closed the 2’s

Yes, we have. And I am a certified COC and a Mash Monster.

I’ll tell you right now: the new #3’s are stinking tough!! Get one to train with if you are closing the #2 with some frequency.

He’s not kidding! I just got my #3 yesterday and I’m nowhere close even though I can generally do sets of 5 reps on the #2. Not that I expected to be close…but still I can barely even move the new #3.

Sybersnott is THE MAN when it comes to grip advice. Definitely pay attention to what he has to say.

I went to the Blade Show yesterday and at the Emerson booth they have the Emerson Challenge - close a #3 or a #4 and win a free knife.

After years and thousands of people trying, I was the first one to finally close that gripper. That was in 2003.

This year, they had the grippers out and it is one of the newer #3’s, very hard. I was able to pin-shut it closed and we started talking about grip strength, training your grip and all that stuff.

So far, only 3 guys have done it.

If you have the chance to get to one of the knife shows this year, go over to the Emerson booth and try their grippers.

I often do tyre flipping drills, not that I’m doing them for grip strength but damn do my forearms kill for the next few days after.

I’ve read something about a grip toy called either DynaFlex or Bioflex (it changed its name from one to th e other, but I’m not sure the order). The idea behind it is that inside the plastic ball, a motor spins another ball very fast. It’s supposed to develop your grip as you just try and hold on to it. Has anyone heard about this? Is it useful, or just another piece of worthless equipment?

I used one of those for rehab when I had a wrist injury about a year ago. Not useful for much more than that, IMO.

John,

I purchased a 250 Heavy Gripper and worked my way up to 4 sets of 10 for each hand. I also walk up and down steps while holding a pair of 100 lb dumbells. Hell on the grip, not to mention the legs!

This, inturn, allowed me to hold a 315 lb barbell for 4 sets of 8 on shrugs without slippage.

And deadlift over 315 lbs without slippage.

Hope that helps,

OD

One question for you gripster specialist…what should be my first “set” of IM grippers?

I thought of at least a #1 and #2…not sure if it’s good to get a Trainer. Id on’t know if it helps, but I’ve done Olifting for aprox 4-5 years.

I’d say you should be good with a #1 and #2. You could probably close the T with no prob. However, sometimes it’s kind of nice to have a “lighter” gripper for light days or you could even do pinches with it. You could also try closing it using only the ring and pinky, as these tend to be the weakest fingers but are very important in gripper closing. Be careful, it’s easy to get addicted to this stuff. Before you know it, you’ll be rolling up your wife’s frying pans.

Get the #1 and the #2.

What kind of grip goals do you want to accomplish? Have you heard about thickbar training??

I’ve heard of thick bar training…but it’s outta reach for me right now. I’m not in the US, I’m in Panama, not much budget either to get equipment through shipping.

Grip goals?

To get the #3! Not because I’m in a hurry to get certified…but because I like training hand strength.

I’ve been a member of the gripboard…I used to be. I’ve been told of other feats…blob, plate pinch, leverage, etc…but I’m not currently interested in accomplishing anyone of those, except the Rolling Thunder.

Certainly not assistance to any sport, I’m an Olifter…but grip is far from being my weakness here.
