In terms of mastery?

While he absolutely dominated, I think its somewhat diminished in that regard by the knowledge that Serra isn’t anywhere near the level of GSP and really got lucky the first fight.

maybe hughes 2 or koscheck 2?

Some great fights already mentioned. I would put the first Barrera-Morales fight right up there.

Lightning in a bottle.
Buster Douglas whipping the baddest man on the planet. On that one night, coming in at 6’ 4" and 230 lbs i don’t believe there are any heavyweights past or present that Buster would not have given a real hard time.
You couldn’t bet on the fight cause no one was betting on Douglas. The only reason anyone watched was to see how brutal Tyson would knock him out.

Admit it, i know thats the only reason i went out to see it.

And at that weight, in shape, Douglas was a handful.
Go back and watch that jackhammer jab, the straight right and the movement.
He was dialed in that one night.
When asked in the ring after the fight if he was scared of facing Tyson, Douglas replied “no, look at him, he’s right over there…flat on his ass”

Bless his heart, he came in at 248 a couple of months later against Holyfield and got knocked out.

It wasn’t the same guy.
When asked how he gained so much weight in such a short time he said
“second and third helpings”
:o)

But that night against Tyson he was one bad man.

LB

Mark Schultz vs Ed Banach. Both went on to win gold at the Olympics.

a lot of those fights weren’t that good it was just great knockouts

the koschek fight was him jabbing til he broke the orbital bone and outwrestled josh. Hughes 2 was good with the left high kick that ended it

Irish and others: Ever watch any of the old vids on Carlos Monson?

Big fan of Monzon. I just went back and watched that stoppage of Monzon stopping Benvenuti. Great fighter, real bad intentions behind every shot.

This is actually a good video for describing how one fighter gets ‘outmuscled’ in the ring. It’s not so much the result of a brutal strength disparity, more the result of a fearsome physicality. I don’t really know how to describe it better than that. The video should make it clear.

Murderous fighter.

Benvenuti was terrific also.
Cassius Clay was runner up to him for boxer of the games in 1960.

I have not. Now I have to watch this…

I think “greatest” depends largely on your criteria for judging. While the Karelin vs Gardener match had a lot of historical significance (and by that criteria I too would rank it up there towards the top), it lacked entertainment value, heart, or technical excellence which IMO are necessary to deem a match/fight as being “great”.

So, my picks would be:
Boxing-
Rocky Marciano vs Joe Louis
Mohammed Ali vs George Foreman
Sugar Ray Robinson vs Jake Lamotta 6
Roberto Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard 1

Honorable mentions (other than those already posted on the thread):
Roy Jones Jr vs James Toney
Evander Holyfield vs Mike Tyson 1 (though 2 became more infamous)
Any of the Ali vs Frazier fights

MMA:
Frankie Edgar vs Gray Maynard 2
Royce Gracie vs Dan Severn
Randy Couture vs Chuck Lidell 1
GSP vs Thiago Alves
Fedor vs Big Nog 1
Maurice Smith vs Mark Coleman (partly for sentimental reasons)

Honorable mention:
Shogun vs Henderson 1
Chris Weidman vs Mark Munoz
Diego Sanchez vs Nick Diaz
Anderson Silva vs Rich Franklin 1

Wrestling:
Jordan Buroughs vs Kyle Dake
Dan Gable vs the World at the 1972 Olympic Games
Sanderson vs Trenge to secure Cael’s 4th title and undefeated steak

Well great fights mean great shots landed I guess. And if it’s a great shot that results in a knockout lol.
What do u want a 12 round all out slugfest?

If you do, both froch Kessler fights are great.

Kessler truly is a warrior, what can you say about a guy who gives his all every time, takes enough punishment that he gets double vision for months after a fight. And then when it clears, wants to do it all over again!

What a man. Kessler again, is fucking bad ass
