Going to Start Working Out Legs

Im with Bonez on this one… Even if someone has chemical help, 3 hours in the gym is quite simply stupid. I’d even say it is probably more counterproductive than anything.

Also just because you have legs close to 30" doesnt mean your program is the best for you. Who’s to say a 1 and a half hour session at higher intensity wouldnt end up with better results?

Anything over 2 hours and I’m pretty sure your causing more damage than good :s

No chocolate chip cookies are better… no oatmeal… no bro… chocolate chip… seriously, are you insane? its all about oatmeal… MY GRASS IS GREENER BITCH

Results speak for themselves. I think sometimes we tend to get so caught up in our own training methods and philosophy that we become defensive when it’s challenged.

If your leg day lasts 3 hours, good for you. But the question is whether you can perform more than 1 a week, so obviously no one would suggest two of those a week, especially not to a beginner. Hungry4more proved that you can train legs multiple times a week and get excellent results, disproving Hyena’s assertion that you do “1 a week out of necessity”.[/quote]

+1 ,well said.

The problem isn’t the fact that someone does “9-10 leg movements … for 3 hours”. If someone has built a significant set of legs with that approach, then good for them.

The problem is that some not-so-developed dude logs into the BB forum and proceeds to berate someone for their routine (good or not) and touting another (somewhat non-standard) routine as ‘end-all-be-all’ while not really being a shining example of success.

Any douchebag can come in and preach “This is how Ronnie Coleman works out and your routine sucks if you don’t work out like him”. Chances are they probably don’t have any pics posted here.

I think I’ve whittled it down to maybe 10 people on this site whose training advice posts have any meaning to me. Some skinny kid parroting someone else’s successful methods as ‘teh only gospel’ is meaningless. It’s like a kid learning to tie his shoelaces, now he’s a fucking expert in knots (NOT).

I’m definitely not the biggest guy here, and most certainly not the smallest, and I STILL am wary of giving out “advice”.

Akuma has found some things that work for him and posts them as such. I think that’s great. He contributes to this forum and I hope he keeps it up.

He may wish to put the cover over Polly’s cage for awhile, though.

I agree with H4M’s advice, also, look at his legs and squat/deadlift numbers, how can you disagree?

Anyway, here’s another reason why I further agree on this post:

Initially during my first 6-8 months of training my leg strength/size were outpacing my upper body, as I was hitting them 2x a week (squat focused with supplementary leg work and deadlift focused with more leg work).

I then dropped legs to 1x a week and they eventually started to fall behind my upper body in terms of development/strength (For example, I bench 315 atm but only squat 365 and deadlift 405, there are many guys on BoI with far better squat/deadlift numbers, but with similar or lower upper body numbers).

Recently I squatted 6x a week with supplementary hamstring work for 2 weeks and I gained 1/2 inch on my thighs. This brought up my squat/deadlift numbers up to where they are now (posted above), gained about 20-30lbs on each.

Volume was relatively low and I experienced little to no DOMS.

So yeah, my belief is that frequency is the way to go for leg development - Although, smart organisation of your training should be the first thought or you may fall behind in other areas of development.

Bah - c’mon dude - look at those knees - no knee muscle at all.

Do you even train your knees?!! ; )

haha baby knees

I am not a jacked 200+ lbs dude so ,y comments probably wont add up to much. but if u also deadlift in the same week, maybe its wise to do squats once per week. Of course u also count deadlift as another “leg day” where u could also do more hamstring work for that day while focusing more on excerises that target the quads on the day u squat.

So far you’ve stated you’re training legs to get a bigger upper body and to get leaner.

You’ll never have big legs because you’re training legs for all the wrong reasons.

okay, i just saw this from hyenas profile

I started lifting weights in high school. It started out as something that I did for fun, and it made me feel good. In June 2008 I started training with a friend from elementary school (Akuma01) and it became a lifestyle. It wasn’t for funzies anymore. Now it is a warpath to build the most impressive physique that is humanly possible. To take my body to levels only dreamt of by most. One day when I think I’m ready for competition, I will take the step, and get up on stage, and I will win.

LOLOLOLLOL does anyone else find that shit hilarious?

I’ve now dropped out of the top five most hated posters. Thanks hyena. Sucks two heavy weights (posting wise) Akuma and Bonez are going back and forth. It’s to be expected though I guess. Most threads start out with a simple question from an inexperienced guy and it becomes a battle of who can correct who.

When I was getting started, my leg routine was

Squats - 1 warm up set w/just the bar, then 3 sets of 12-15 (gradually increasing the weight to see what I can handle)
Leg Extensions - same minus the warm up
Leg Curls- Same minus the warm up
Standing Calve Raises - 1 warm up set with low weight, then 3 sets again

I stuck to this for about 3-4 weeks weeks and by then my legs stopped being sore and I was able to add more exercises and decrease the rep range. Good luck!

No, but I’m thinking about it.

Do you think my shoulders will grow if I start training my knees directly?

I started doing grip work and my peni… ah, nevermind.

Bonez is in my top 3 for posters on this site. In case you care, I’m #1 and Celtics (R.I.P) is #2.

There is no reason to ever be in a gym for 3 hours at a time unless either you work there or you’re giving out free handies in the sauna.

Do you really need to ask me that question? You know they will!!!

You are in no position to be putting people down either, so…

We need more serious people around here, and there is nothing wrong with checking someone out of line, but don’t bash him for feeling strongly and serious.

I’ll take misguided passion over twinks talking about being fucking average, or old, fat, washed up fools delusional ramblings.

I have trained legs twice a week pretty much my entire lifting career, it is my preferred frequency. That way I can work them hard without completely killing myself twice a week and the recovery time is just right.

WTF people? I didnt make any comments in an attempt to make somone leave the forum. Hardly that. This isnt my forum, I have no desire to make anyone stop posting and if anyone feels the need to stop posting because of someothing someone said to them… well then theyre a pussy.

The post I made was done so solely because this Hyena guy made a dumbass comment. With no pictures of himself in anything but a sleeveless shirt. Basically cut n paste SteelyD’s most recent post right here and you have exactly how I feel.

If people want to train for 3 hours, great. If thats enjoyable to them, awesome. Do I agree with it. No way. But who cares; my opinion isnt worth more than anyone elses (except countingbeans because he didnt get the memo about the ghey hat avatar being sooo 2 months ago but anyway).

Anyone who made a post trying to turn this into a soap opera needs to pipe down. There was no agrument taking place and certainly no one was trying to make someone else leave. People disagree about things and that doesnt mean sides need to be taken. Get over it.

I chuckled at handies in the sauna.

On a more related note, I just can’t see how someone can keep intensity up for 3 hours in the gym, especially on a leg day. I always hit legs twice a week either quad/ham or 2 lower days depending on the program; usually for a lower day I’d hit some sort of squat for 6-8 total sets then say RDLs for 4-5 sets and then 2 or 3 smaller movement (ham curls, pull throughs, leg press ect…) for 3-4 sets and I’m donzo, and I like to think I got a decent pair of wheels.
