Getting High

7/3/13
AM
35 minute ruck with a 44 pound vest and 10 pounds of ankle weights.

So, long story short, strained my back. Not the same as the last injury that took me 6 months to get over though. Just a minor strain. I got off balance and started to fall forward on a front squat, took a step, and felt a twinge. This time I was smart enough to shut it down immediately.

Still training hard and doing everything I can. I’m going to switch to a submaximal program with some more structure than what I’ve been doing, which has been basically a total and utter lack of programming. Bought and read beyond 5/3/1 the other day and there is a bunch of cool stuff I’d like to try. So, I’m thinking I’m going to run 5/3/1 starting out really really light on my lower body maxes and maybe using some alternate movements to take some stress off my back.

Also, I won’t be doing the stair climb. Registration filled up in 12 minutes and our department didn’t get in.

I’ll start logging again monday.

So I lied, I went ahead and started today.

First time squatting since the back strain. I was stiff as hell this morning and didn’t think I’d be able to squat at all. Got it loosened up enough though. Been working really hard on my form. I think I’m getting there, but I’m weak as a kitten squatting this way. Just trying to hit about parallel. I’m completely open to tips and critiques.

Back felt awesome. I’m thinking the belt may have been part of the problem. The more my back has hurt the tighter I’ve cinched down my belt. Doing without it felt really good. All these reps were really easy. I found it difficult not to push harder with my back feeling good, but I kept it easy. The set of 350 was grip limited. Super slick bar in the crapy gym + really hot (sweaty) + forgot chalk and straps = tough to hold the bar. My abs were cramping halfway through the leg raises and I kept having to stop and stretch them.

Driving back to Tennessee tomorrow, probably won’t be doing much.

Bait and switch. I’m also not getting to do the stair climb I was going to be training for, so the title is kinda null and void.

I hate taking days off, but I’ve needed them.

Where in Tennessee do you live? It looks beautiful.

CS

On a farm to the south of Nashville. And yes, it’s pretty awesome.

Cool, my parents have (a lot of) Rhode Island Red Hens. They make very big, and tasty eggs.
They’re also pretty nice looking.

Yeah, they lay damn near close to an egg a day each. We just let ours roam so the eggs taste awesome. They eat very little chicken feed. Bugs and table scraps make amazingly tasty eggs.

Ours are also almost pets. Super tame. It might make me a hick, but sitting on our porch in rocking chairs watching the chickens is a favorite past time of mine.

Deads were tough to lock out. Did leg curls at the end because the NGHRs did nothing but kill my forearms due to the way I was forced to hold the medium band. I think I’ll go to a light band gripped in front of my head and cut down on the reps if I need to next time.
