For Whatever It's Worth

I was gathering my belongings in the locker room today when an older guy, whom I usually talk to when I see him, walked in singing an Elvis tune. After a couple of notes, he stopped, took a moment to compose himself, and then told me that today’s music is uninspired and mediocre. I said, sure, most of the tracks we here while we’re working out at this gym suck, but there are a good number of artists today that make meaningful and/or quality music. More importantly, they’re sitting here with mink on their back and their bank account stacked. Hey, playa, do they have any reason to become inspired if they’re making money and selling records? You stick with what works, even if that means mediocre music. He nodded, scratched his groin, and headed for the shower.

Most of the songs you hear on the radio these days ARE NOT written by the artist singing them.

“I was gathering my belongings in the locker room today when an older guy, whom I usually talk to when I see him, walked in singing an Elvis tune.”

Well, Elvis is some sort of god so its only natural for the man to walk around singing his tunes.

"After a couple of notes, he stopped, took a moment to compose himself, and then told me that today's music is uninspired and mediocre."

Sounds like a smart man. "Popular" music right now is basically shit. There are a few decent artists that at least try to put out a decent product, but most fail miserably.

"I said, sure, most of the tracks we here while we're working out at this gym suck, but there are a good number of artists today that make meaningful and/or quality music."

What bands or artists are you referring to. Rap doesn't count, for it is not music.

"More importantly, they're sitting here with mink on their back and their bank account stacked. Hey, playa, do they have any reason to become inspired if they're making money and selling records?"

What's the point then. Why try to improve your deadlift. 500 is a nice round number, I'll just be satisfied witht that. In interviews that Paul McCartney has done he has said that when the Beatles got together to make a record they put the best effort into each album that was possible. Paul would say that they tried to give the fan their money's worth. I'm not sure if that happens to much today.

"You stick with what works, even if that means mediocre music."

I guess so. You can't shine shit, eh?

Hopefully, another "Nirvana" will come along soon and change the music scene. I'm also sickened by the attempts of the media to urbanize everything. Hip-hop is constantly shoved down our throats. I'm also tired of seeing white boys with pants that are hanging past their ass with their hats on crooked, speaking as though their black.

Sorry, tangent over.

I don’t think music needs another fucked-up rocker to splatter his brains on the floor because he’s pissed at his life. That’s not exactly uplifting. Nirvana songs made me feel all weird inside.

I was only referring to a change in the current music scene, that's all. What band or artist has had such an influnce on music since the Beatles. Nirvana was the only one that comes to my mind.

I'm not trying to compare the Beatles music to Nirvana's or anything. I'm just saying that the current music scene needs a band or artist to come along and change it in a different direction. And that is exactly what Nirvana did.
