Does this apply to normal presses (not from pins) as well?

I need you to be more specific.

For example, on a regular bench press do you do the preloading like you describe, where you start pushing a little bit before you explode, or do you just explode straight from the bottom?

I ask because despite using noob weights I am noticing my sternum and shoulders getting what seems like an inappropriate amount of wear and tear (but not a specific injury). To the point I have had to drop weighted dips because of the pressure I feel on the joints. Could be from a number of issues of course but after reading that description it sounded like that might be part of it - if it is meant to apply to not-from-dead-stop presses

I think preloading applies more to a bottom-up excercise. the “preloading” for a bench would be more like just staying tight before you begin.
