Back when gameplay and not pretty particles mattered most there was a not so powerful little quality game shittin’ powerhouse known as the Sony Playstation. Just the sound of the signature swooshy synth start up sound makes me smile.
My pick is Castlevania - Symphony of the Night.
This game had it all for me. It was a 2d side scroller, there were no stages or levels, it was a huge map that you filled in. It was the perfect mix of rpg elements in an action game. You leveled up your character by gaining experience through killing enemies. You could equip weapons and armor to different body parts, which in turn effected your defense, attack, luck etc.
Weapons and items could be obtained from killing items. There were secrets galore that made the replay value almost endless. You found items that changed your character into different animals or substances such as a bat or mist that could pass through certain walls to get to new areas or use sonar in an unlit area full of spikes. Yeah this game was the shit.
Wow, great choice! My choice is either this or FFVII, but that’s pretty predictable. I’m always surprised by how overlooked and under-appreciated SotN is/was. The original Crash Bandicoot and Twisted Metal 2 are a few runner-ups, too.
NFL Blitz!!!

Final Fantasy 7 (8 was amazing too)

Crisis Core is pretty good!

good call!
I liked Gran Turismo. The original Medal of Honor was good too.

Xenogears - far and away. Not that trumped up shit trilogy they put out for PS2 over the past 5 years (Xenosaga).
For those who said Final Fantasy games - give Xenogears a shot. I thought FF7 was the end all of RPGs until I played this.
Xenogears and FF7 were the two best games on the PS1, I almost cried the day my FF7 disk2 stopped reading, I had already beaten the game but I was going back and unlocking everything.
OP, you’re wise beyond your post count.
Symphony of the Night!
I don’t know if you guys played this game but it was SOOOO INTENSE, it was called ONE. You had a cybernetic arm and had a entire army after you, I freakin LOVED that game.
Final Fantasy VII is still the best RPG i’ve ever played.
Metal Gear Solid.
Street Fighter Alpha III.
Twisted Metal 1, 2, and 3 were my favorites.
Project Overkill… That game was my life.
MGS… That game was my life.
Intelligent Qube… That game was my life.
Parasite Eve 2… that game was my life.
PS1? OMG, that reminds me of good times- in the 90’s!
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
Doom
Driver
Jonah Lomu Rugby
The incredible crisis
Gran Turismo
Crash Bandicoot
Tekken 3
Gran Turismo
Tekken 3
Spyro 1-3
CTR (Crash Team Racing)
Croc
I still was young when I played the PS1, so that was the extent of my gameplay; however, I fucking owned those games.

Tekken 4 was on the PS2. I don’t think it came out on the PS1.
Dynasty Warriors lol
Twisted Metal made me buy a playstation in the first place.
And Metal Gear Solid was the last video game I played seriously. After that, I felt like all other games must be crappy so I pretty much stopped. And I found out I was fat and had to learn to play sports, duh.

I personally thought Dynasty Warriors 27 was the best of the series.
