Easy Strength Based Assistance Work?

#1

Has anyone ever tried using a combination of 531 and Dan John’s ‘Easy Strength’? Basically, doing the core lift first as 531 directs and then the other core lifts for 2x5 every session?

i.e, if my four core lifts are: Box Squat, Trap Bar Deadlift, Bench and Press then my sessions would look like (skip this if you follow what I’m talking about):

A)
Box Squat (531)
Press( 2x5)
TBD (2x5)
Bench (2x5)

B)
Bench (531)
Box Squat (2x5)
Press (2x5)
TBD (2x5)

C)
TBD (531)
Bench (2x5)
Box Squat (2x5)
Press (2x5)

D)
Press (531)
TBD (2x5)
Bench (2x5)
Box Squat (2x5)

I’ve found I enjoy and respond well to constant volume on the big movements with a smaller weight much better than doing them once a week (mental placebo effect maybe, who cares, I’m about the result not the underlying mechanism) but I didn’t want to bastardise the glory of what makes 531 tick.

My apologies if I’m repeating a question or have mentally skipped over something in the book.

If you are looking for more frequency on the big lifts, there is a template called 5/3/1 frequency project you could look into.
