Well, just like everybody’s metabolism, hormones, etc. vary from person to person, peoples’ taste buds vary too.
In the case of Leucine, it’s an issue of actually HAVING a particular taste bud which, anecdotally, seems to be in the minority of people (around 30%, from a dubious study I ran across once). The NUMBER of taste buds you have can also vary, so you’d get more or less of the Leucine reaction based on that. The first time I got lLeucine, I opened it up to see what it tasted like.
I just touched my finger to the powder to get what stuck and even with just that, I had my mouth under the sink for 3-4 minutes. I try to interject with this every time I see a Leucine thread started, mostly because there are so many more people who can’t taste it and a thread can go a whole page with people saying it has no taste and never mentioning that it’s a case-by-case thing.
The positive side to the whole thing is that Leucine isn’t the ONLY thing that this taste bud reacts to, so you’re actually tasting even some normal things more fully than most people.
