Deadlift Form Issue

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Personal stats.
5’10
230lbs (104 kg)
Current maxes
440/315/440

Been running 5/3/1 for a few cycles now and seeing some great results.

Just experiencing a form issue on my deadlifts. When the weight gets heavy (>90% of training max) the barbell on the right hand side has a tendency to drift away from my body. Just the right side. This is the hand I grip underhand and doesn’t happen on lighter weights.

Just curious if anyone would have any advice as to why this is happening? I’ll try and post a video of my recent 200kg lift.

Thanks

Sounds like your upper back isn’t tight enough. Try locking down your shoulder blades (“put them in your back pockets”) and contracting your lats. Paused deads can help some people overcome bar drift but may not work in your case since it only happens on heavy loads. Hard to say without a video but that’s my guess.

Are your hands equally spaced apart, or is your right hand closer to the center of the bar compared to the left?

I would personally just use straps to avoid the problem entirely.

Switch grip.
