Iāve always heard that Michelangelo made the head larger as well, to create the illusion of proportion when viewed from below. Sometimes artists skew proportions (and other aspects of their work) to create a desired effect.

The statue wasnāt of some random guy from Florence named David. It was supposed to depict David from the Old Testament story of David and Goliath. Thatās why heās carrying a sling over his shoulder.
In the Bible story, David is described as a āyouth.ā Since back in those times, people were more or less adults by the time they were 15 or 16, my guess is David was probably around 12 when he killed Goliath. Iād say the statue depicts a hell of a physique for a 12-year-old!
