I tore mine back in July 2005. I had surgery 7 days after I tore it. My pec tore comepletely from the bone. I was maxing 355 at the time and I am just now able to do around 205. Sucks, but I have to listen to my body. [/quote]
Tearing your pec means that there are going to be some changes with how you train and how you think about training. I went from reps of 405lbs for 6 reps to I now doing 250 for reps of 6. My pec actually tore on the third rep while doing sets of 3.
With a major injury, like a pec tear, you are going to have to make good of the terrible incident. You can either let it get you, or ask yourself, “how can I make this into a positive”?
hello my name is gary and i am new to this site . i tore my pec last week and while doing a search to find out info on pec tears i found this site
my local doctor doesnt know much about pec tears so i wll be seeing several doctors in the next few days to get thier opinions . i have my mri’s in my hand but my docotr didnt seem to really know much.
it seems i have a partial tear but my doctor really wasnt sure on what was going on .
if i need surgery i am seriously considering traveling to have it done by dr carl basamania in north carolina.(i am in new york)
i have a question for crash7 . how well did you recover from your surgery with dr basamania ? are you still having pain ? did you regain all of your strength ? how bad is the scar / any deformity on that pec ? any feedback would be greatly appreciated
any suggestions or feed back from anyone with a pec tear would be greatly appreciated
I tore my pec very minorly 2x’s, maybe 3x’s all doing flat bench. I’ve gotten a ton of ART on it and it always makes if feel “better”. As in, less likely to tear again, less painfull.

Sorry to hear that bro. Never had that happen to me before but I feel your pain of not being able to do what you want in the gym. On a positive note, it is great to see the support network kick in on this site and give you some solid advice and feedback. Good luck.

Happened to a friend of mine when he was going for a 1RM. Black and blue, tore away from the corner of his chest, ugly!
He waited too long to check it out, and it ended up never being able to be fixed.
Either way, I hope it works out for you.
Thank you.
When mine bruised I saw all kinds of pretty colors running down my arm. Green, Purple, black, blue. Twas wild.
“Tore a pec, right where it joins at the armpit. Which in turn is irritating the rotator. Pec can’t be fixed. Rotator will be fine. (Can’t even throw right now.)”
The guy I went to see said there was nothing I could do. I waited too long. Said I was too old to be lifting anyway and deadlifting would cause me back problem. (This from a guy who’s not only a Dr., but an ex Husker as well who goes with them on games.) Freaked me out. He’s a pretty well built guy himself. Anyway he told me that I should go real light with lots of reps and don’t be suprised if I can’t ever lift heavy again. Well it’s been 1.5 years now and I’m back to around 260lbs. Which, coming from a guy who couldn’t even lay on the bench without his whole shoulder girdle “falling off” I think is pretty miraculous. The pain is gone. Got a meet this weekend and my back is strong as ever. I kept deadlifting.

Way to go and persevere through a tough situation! Talking to a doctor that does not understand your goal can be extremely frustrating.
What other symptoms did people have besides the arm pit brusing. I was on rep 8/10 315 going strong no strain and pow, failure warm sensation, felt like it was a tear, bar crash on my chest " spotter you were going so strong didn’t thing you need help." it was painful at first, and only hurts when I put my are overhead then I have pain I arm pit area. I love bench and my chest so I am really down right now. As I type this from my iPhone at the gym, I have very little brusing under the ice pack I have on it. Do you guys think I had a tear? I don’t feel a Ton of pain and range of motion is sore. It is right where the armpit is anterior side. Thinking back I may have injjired this area straining on 315 in Aug, but I fought the pain off and it has been fine “sore to normal” since.
If I am indeed injured what gym activities can I do now? I feel like years and years of hard work are now being flushed down the toilet

Tore a pec, right where it joins at the armpit. Which in turn is irritating the rotator. Pec can’t be fixed. Rotator will be fine. (Can’t even throw right now.)
Doc says no more heavy benching. 50-60% of max only. DAMMIT! He also says that deadlifting will sooner or later cause a back injury. Ignoring that. Waking up could cause death that day too. Have decided to go ahead and still compete. My squat and DL are doing fine. Just did 400 for a set of 5 reps yesterday on the squat and I have a love for the iron. I’m willing to do what it takes as far as the bench. I had it back up to 250, but probably will start with like 185 in competition. I don’t want to blow it out and not be able to do anything.
Also gonna stay off the regular BB bench’s and use Push presses and machines and DB’s for a while.
Maybe in a year or two, have the dude test my strength somehow and see if I’ve built up the supporting tissue enough to withstand a heavy bench effort 3-4 times a year.

I figure it ain’t gonna happen if I don’t try.
Any comments or anything?

Only genetic freaks should lift heavy weights. Most people should just do pushups, pullups, and run. If you DO lift, it should be something you can lift at least 30 times.
Train like an MMA fighter; they look better than bodybuilders anyway.
