Building vs Cutting

I am very new to this, I am a 44 year old insulin dependent diabetic, who had been a lazy ass for the last 30 years, I woke up almost 2 years ago and lost nearly 60 pounds, and since this past October I’ve been following a muscle building workout routine, so needless to say I’m not huge, I am noticing small gains here and there, so I am encouraged, but I have a beer gut that I cannot seem to get rid of. I was thinking of switching to a cutting workout routine, and bring my calorie intake down, but I still want to build muscle as I am not big my any means, any thoughts or suggestions please
