Building A 'Heavy' Room

I’d cut out the decline and one of the inclines if it means the difference between having a good amount of open space or a crowded lifting area. Other than that, in order of importance: chalk, all purpose barbells (Texas Power Bars are good), big dumbells, deadlift jack, specialty bars (Texas/Okie deadlift bars, SSB, cambered squat bar, squat bars), monolift.

this thing, right? i like it.[/quote]

That’s technically a spider bar. An SSB just has the padded handles. However, the spider bar would be a great choice.

As for deadlift bar, I imagine he meant an actual deadlift bar, not a trap bar.

Meh, I don’t know if its cambered enough to be a Spider Bar…kind of a halfsy.

get this sucker http://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=212&pid=10

Yeah, I didn’t even notice that. It’s just weird.

I don’t know if any one mention this but weightlifting rubber plates.

Unless they are in your light room, then a smith and a leg press.

I don’t know if your ??? meant you didn’t know what a cambered bar was: http://cvabarbell.com/Photos/Web_Photos/IMG_0701.JPG It’s awesome (the top one). Teaches you to stay tight as the bar swings due to the weight location.

That said, this page shows a bunch of awesome ideas http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://cvabarbell.com/Photos/Web_Photos/IMG_0701.JPG&imgrefurl=http://cvabarbell.com/equipment.htm&usg=__bRD6r58L2z_Q1Qefwpbe29CkiRI=&h=336&w=448&sz=50&hl=en&start=3&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=vhIMAUQIUXembM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcambered%2Bsquat%2Bbar%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26tbs%3Disch:1

Rubber weights are a great idea! This thread is cool and being able to help “construct” the heavy room sounds like fun. Chalk is crucial.

How heavy do your gym’s DBs go?
It would be pretty cool to have the 5-100s in the “regular” gym, and everything heavier than that in the “heavy” gym. Like up to 250. That’s how I’ve seen it set up at at least one serious gym in my area.

dont know that I would get this one exactly - but its a start - jammer

our DB’s go to 120 on the main floor. i’d like them to go to 200 in the heavy room.

x2 on the rubber plates, good stuff.

i’ve never seen a cambered squat bar before until i googled it. now it makes sense. that seems like a luxury though. other things come first.

Glute Ham Raise

Reverse Hyper

Big narly dip station with big narly chains like at metroflex

hmmm that’s all I got

Definitely get a monolift if you’re looking to cater to a hardcore crowd. PLers will come.

Also, glute ham raise.

If you’re going to have PLers doing heavy (800+lb) squats, a mastodon bar is awesome. It’s expensive, but Mark said he’s had his for over 4 or so years and it’s still not bent. (This is a bar that is regularly loaded with 1000+lbs).

A bench bar, too. Obviously, this is similar to the above, but for the bench. For heavy benches, a good bench bar is awesome.

Lifting with specialty bars will spoil the shit out of you.

I think a lot of the things listed here are considered “luxuries.” Other than a few select items, everything else is just an accessory.

You know what you need, and I’m being serious…

A weight bitch. Pay some skinny eager kid 6 dollars an hour to rack and un-rack the weights, and keeps them organized, etc…

As I contemplated leaving the 6 plates loaded on the bar and walking away after T-Bars, this idea just struck me as awesome.

Weight bitch, at a pimp gym near you.

I’m submitting this list to my manager soon. thanks for the help folks.
