Breastfeeding: Milk Proteins & Gas?

Hi ladies,

I am hoping that some of you with experience breastfeeding and taking whey and casein (or even just drinking milk and eating yogurt) can give me the benefit of your expertise.

If a breastfeeding mom consumes dairy, does that lead to the baby having more gas?

What about whey- and casein-based protein powders?

I’m pretty certain that the tales relating to cabbage, broccoli, garlic and other veggies are wives tales because these usually cause gas due to the fiber - which, unless I’m mistaken, doesn’t end up in the breast milk. However, I understand that the milk protein can end up in the breast milk, and can lead to very gassy babies. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I breastfed my three children, two of them are twins, for almost a year without a single problem. I drank lots of milk, raw milk when I could get it, and plenty of yogurt and cheese. They didn’t have a problem when I ate cruciferous vegetables. Not even garlic! I guess I was very lucky!

It’s been a while for me and I don’t really remember, but there’s a ton of good info on the la leche league website that you might find helpful
