The active ingredient in viagra is sildenafil. Sildenafil was originally approved to treat pulmonary hypertension, high blood pressure in the lungs. When doing the clinical work for ph, the researchers noticed the interesting side effect of increased erectile performance in the test subjects. Sildenafil was first marketed as Revatio 20mg tablets and dosed 5 times daily (24 hours) for pulmonary hypertension. Shortly thereafer, Viagra came to market in 25mg, 50mg, and 100 mg doses.
