Big and WHAT???

There is no question that today, the aim of a bodybuilder is to come into a show “huge and ripped”. This involves a 1-2 week pre-contest phase of sodium and potassium manipulation, carb depletion and loading, water manipulation, dieuretics,etc. etc. But what about PRIOR to the 80’s, (Arnold, Oliva, Zane, Scott “ripped” (from what I’ve read) was not a big part of bodybuiding lingo? What was the goal of a contest? What did the judges judge? And more importantly, what did those final weeks involve then, especially as it relates to nutrition ? (I think someone on this site once said that Arnold didn’t really change his diet in the final week. What a change from today!)
