Beginner's Question: Chains?

I’ve read a couple threads where people hook chains on their weights. What’s this for? I assume it’s similar to bands where the resistance is at the top/end of the move rather than the bottom/beginning except that for the chains it’s adding increased weight at the chains are pulled off of the floor?

Am I far off on this one?

Yes, you’ve pretty much got it. It adds weight to the lifts as you get to stronger parts of the lift. Check out Dave Tate’s “The Eight Keys” series.

Just to add, chains also add an element of stability control - the chains swing just a little, as opposed to bands, which pull straight down.
