Basketball: Wrist Endurance

A few years ago my wrist suffered some pains from shooting the basketball too much. I shot a lot, but I didn’t shoot as much as most D1 college shooters do. I’m guessing it was because I simply wasn’t strong enough to be putting that much force on my wrist that many times. Is that the case? Are basic wrist extensor/flexor exercises the trick for preventing this on top of regular work outs??
