traversing that snow patch that you can just see in the top of the previous pic. it’s ~ 2000’ down to that lake in the top right corner.

we have a secret pass-acquisition method. it involves driving up there and hoping that a few people have NOT picked up their passes. according to my friend, it has never failed him, and he does this every year. BUT, he has always gone up on a friday. AND, note that a pass is not required for the mountaineer’s route. the ranger station said that once you get up there, no one in their right mind would force you back down that way.

Bass Tard,
Sounds tough bro. I can’t decide if the way back down was worse than the ascent. Definitely more painful though! I’ve put on quite a bit of weight since the last time I’ve done any serious hiking and I could feel it. At the beginning of the day I was laughing at the douchebags with the poles, but I would’ve traded my firstborn for some by the end of the day!

You’ve produced?? Kids? Ohhh shiiiiit.

Yeah man, trekking poles are the bees knees, I have a pair of Leki’s that I’ve had since '99 and wouldn’t trade them for anything, especially when you have a hefty 3+ day backpack. The main drawback is when some fucker in your group asks to borrow one of yours since they don’t have one. One is better than none but when you have two you can really cruise…

Bastard,
I’m strangely excited having read that…

Awesome pics! That’s the kind of thing I love about living in Denver - all the hiking/backpacking is minutes from my door.

My original weight loss program was a trek in the New Mexico Rocky mountains. I was in 8th grade, and obese. We hiked about 100 miles in 2 weeks, and I lost 4 pants sizes!

Hiking & backpacking are awesome.

I see the advantage of hiking poles, but they just look so queer! Man, I pick up a stick along the way or something - but I just can’t bring myself to use those poles! To each his own…

FamilyMan… You have to try them. It’s one of those rare guilty pleasures, like finding that secluded shitter at your work that no one knows about but you. Once you use them on a long trek you’ll never go back to some lame old stick you find on the ground.

10-4 soldiers. they do look gay as hell, but they reduce the impact on your feet/knees/hips by 30-40%, and i am waaay too big of a pussy to not take advantage of that. there are times to be a tough-as-nails hard-@ss. this was not one of them.

Bastard

Nice pics of the High Peaks. I love the Adirondaks.

Looks awesome. Seems like a great trip. I miss it. No time these days.
