Aussie Republic

What do all the Aussies here think about still in some way technically being a British colony?

I find it rather disgusting that our head-of-state is not elected by the people of Australia but rather is forced upon us to be the head of the British Royal Family.

There seems to be a lot of debate about how it would disrupt our legal/government systems but I don’t see the problem.

I say we just keep everything how it is (having a Prime Minister in charge) but make just one small change to our consitution:
Have our head of state elected by popular vote and call them President. The President would assume the role of the Queen (appointing the Governors of the States and the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia).

Knowing Aussies we’d probably vote a sportsperson as our president!
