Attempts at Strongman

Grappling is even worse, there’s a reason that college wrestling matches are only seven minutes total. There’s no “jabbing” to catch your breath and save energy.

Probably bias, but I never found wrestling to be as rough. I think it’s because I’m so inefficient at kicking, and because prior to any wrestling matches I had practice/was in some sort of shape prior to competition.

Having some wrist pain. Laid off pressing today, no low bar back squatting for a while.

thank god im not the only one!

My left leg from knee to toe is costed in bruises. My right leg, not so much. I’m not coordinated enough to kick very hard on that side

Might need to mentally check myself a bit. Now I’m 2 for 2 with bloody noses during sparring, and each time I start to giggle. I had this huge, goofy, bloody smile as I walked this guy into the ropes. I need work my defense/avoidance rather than my chin.

Do you stop at a certain number, or when your upper back/rhomboids bursts into flame?

I like to pick a number and rest pause until i hit it, while hitting consistent sets. For example, to hit 500 I did 25, 5 deep breaths, 25 more, 5 deep breaths, etc.

Found out that if I get punched cleanly in the jaw, even if its not too hard, i shoot a double leg and transition to mount before I remember that I’m sparring stand up. Primate brain took over, was a bit odd.

Unscheduled deload. Body was feeling bad, not feeling snappy with weights . I’ve probably been massively under eating., especially with added activity. So, I’ve almost doubled calories and tapered down caffeine again. I’m amazed at the turnaround in such a short time. Energy has been way up, feeling excited to get back to to usual schedule tomorrow.

Found out I can throw a jumping head Kick relatively well. Prior to sparring, the coach let my partner know that i was new, but very athletic.
This was a weird moment. I have never, ever been called athletic. I have always struggled with kinetic learning, never moved very well, and generally felt unskilled in movement. Felt like the ugly duckling having a minor transition to swan

Also, helped prep a lightweight MMA fighter for his second amateur bout. He is primarily a boxer, and I just pressed forward as a grappler to help with his takedown defense. It’s fun to shoot doubles and be able to toss the person in the air, only to catch them and set them down lightly

After, i went to visit my sister and her family. They are in a suburb with 4 kids, who all have neighbor friends. Kids were playing tag, boxing gloves came out, and a somewhat more physical game emerged. I then strapped on my shin guards and “tagged” various 3-8 year olds to the ground with kicks while chasing them around the neighborhood. Surprisingly difficult from a cardiovascular standpoint, as my stipulation from the kids was that my hands had to stay behind my back, and I could only use my legs.

Wait, since when could you push weight overhead? Nice pressing man!

Just to make sure, that’s 3 singles  everything from 200-260 feels almost the same, but any more feels way heavy. Thanks sir!
