Dumbbells are superior if you are looking to get stronger at lifts involving DBs. Barbells are superior if you are looking to get stronger at lifts involving BBs.
You would be better off alternating between both of them. Barbell is more taxing on the back but equal force applied to both sides of body. Dumbbell isolates to one side, it’s harder to cheat. I find I get more pump from dumbbell curls than bb curls. But I still try to incorporate both. Good luck

I generally use barbells, but for certain exercises barbells hurt and dumbbells don’t so that is why I use them now. However when I was training athletes, I used dumbbells for specialised strength, based on the particular sports, for shot putters, heavy low rep barbell bench press and military press for general strength, and incline dumbbell press for specific strength.
